Georgia vs. LSU: Keys to a BCS-Busting Bulldogs Upset

Richard LangfordNov 28, 2011

If Georgia executes the following game plan they will upset LSU and send the BCS into complete chaos.

Georgia has an excellent defense and they have won 10 straight games. They are going to be big underdogs in this SEC championship but they can win it. Here is what they have to do.

Commit to Run Game

The Bulldogs are going to have a hard time running the ball, but they can't let that stop them from trying to run. Georgia is 36th in the nation in rushing yards per game.

They've totaled 2,167 yards on the ground at 4.26 yards per carry. This is the backbone of their offense. They can't allow LSU to knock them off of their game plan and out of their comfort zone.

LSU enters this game having allowed just 2.64 yards per carry. They have done this largely on the efforts of a deep and talented defensive line.

The Bulldogs must run right at this defense. They have to find a way to get some first downs, and then continue to wear down the talented defensive front.

Dominate on 3rd Down

To get those first downs, Georgia is going to have to be excellent on third downs. Georgia has been solid on third down all year. They have converted 44.7 percent of their third downs.

LSU has been solid on third-down defense, but not as impressive as you'd expect given their overall dominance. They have allowed teams to convert 35.06 percent of their third-down plays.

This is going to be a key stat in this game. Georgia can't afford three-and-outs. They need to keep LSU's defense on the field in the attempt to wear them down and appear mortal.

They must also utilize every opportunity they have to get LSU's offense off of the field. Georgia has been amazing on third-down defense this season. They have allowed just a 29.8 percent conversion rate on third down.

LSU has been excellent at converting third downs. They are at 49 percent for the season. If the Tigers hit anywhere near that, than this game will be over before it begins.

Win Turnover Battle

This is the key to almost any upset. Underdogs can quickly equal the playing field by winning the turnover battle. Unfortunately for Georgia, LSU seldom turns the ball over.

They have just eight turnovers on the season (four fumbles and four interceptions).

The good news for Georgia is that they are amazing at creating turnovers. Georgia has collected 26 turnovers (17 interceptions and nine fumbles).

Helping them out in this regard is the fact that they are especially adept at causing fumbles. Georgia has forced 23 fumbles, and while LSU has lost only four fumbles, they have put the ball on the ground 16 times.
