Urban Meyer Ohio State: What We Can Expect from Famed Coach's Return
Urban Meyer will instantly turn the Buckeyes into a top 25 team. He has the track record, the system and the name power to pull it off.
Meyer's hiring is not yet official, but numerous outlets have reported it is a done deal. If that is indeed the case then the future is bright for Ohio State. Here is why.
System
Urban Meyer will bring the offense he created and is now a college football mainstay: the spread option.
The premise is simple, and the results are typically amazing. Meyer wants to spread out his playmakers and force the defense to play sideline to sideline to help him create isolated mismatches.
The QB almost always lines up in the shotgun, but that certainly doesn't mean they are going to be a pass-heavy offense.
Meyer wants to run the ball first. The QB usually has a key read that tells him if he should keep the ball, hand it off or sometimes pass.
When he does pass it is usually quick-hitting efficient passes. Meyer wants an athletic QB as the quarterback will be called on often to run.
Wins
The Buckeyes can expect wins—lots of wins. Meyer has won everywhere he has been.
In his 10-year head coaching career, Meyer has compiled a 104-23 record. He has never experienced a losing season. His worst season as a head coach came in his last season when he was 8-5.
Sanctions
Ohio State is facing potential sanctions from the NCAA for the violations by team members and staff that ultimately forced Jim Tressel to resign.
To try and lighten their punishment, Ohio State self-imposed sanctions. Among the self-imposed sanctions is the loss of five scholarships each year for each of the next five years.
Recruiting
The loss of scholarships will only be a minor hindrance for Ohio State. There will still be plenty of room to add impact players.
The Buckeyes are one of the highest profile schools in the nation, and Urban Meyer is one of the game's great recruiters.
His prolific offense is tailor made for playmakers. Meyer knows the kind of athletes that he wants, and those athletes are usually eager to join Meyer.
Immediate Success
Buckeye fans will not have to wait long for success. In fact, they won't have to wait at all.
Meyer will make an immediate impact. Ohio State struggled to a 6-6 regular season record this year, but they are not without talent.
They are currently 28th in the nation in rushing, and they have key pieces of that rushing attack returning. QB Braxton Miller has the ability to thrive in the Meyer's offense.
He has the legs, he has the arm and Meyer will give him the plays that allow him to improve his accuracy.
Meyer will likely supplement his first recruiting class with a few junior college transfers—one of which will likely be a QB to help push or replace Miller.
This will be a better team next year than it was this year. They will be in contention for the Big Ten title.
Long Term Success
The sky is the limit. Meyer could very well add to his tally of two national championships. Ohio State will be perennial Big Ten title contenders and permanent fixtures in the top 25.
