BCS Rankings: Overrated Teams Headed for Bowl Beatdowns
The over-ranking of the following teams is going to lead to them getting destroyed by superior teams in bowl game matchups.
This is not unique to this season. It happens every year. The following are the teams that everyone will wind up saying, "They aren't as good as we thought" about after their bowl disasters.
No. 5 Virginia Tech
The Hokies are ranked No. 5, with an impressive 11-1 record. What isn't impressive is who they have played.
The Hokies have had just one game against a team in the top 25. And they were destroyed in that game, 23-3 to Clemson.
They have a 37-26 win over a Georgia Tech team that has spent much of the season in the top 25, but outside of that, they have done very little to prove themselves.
Against this weak competition, they have managed to post the seventh best mark in points allowed per game. However, in the same weak schedule, they have put up enough points to only be ranked 44th in points per game.
The Hokies are going to find themselves in a high-profile bowl game, and they are going to get destroyed. Their lack of firepower will doom them.
No. 6 Arkansas
Despite their 41-17 drubbing by LSU, Arkansas fell just three spots in the polls to No. 6. They are still in excellent shape to play in a BCS Bowl game. They shouldn't be in one.
This is a team that just allowed 41 points to LSU. The Tigers are amazing, but their offense is not 41 points amazing. At least not if you have a defense of a top 10 team.
Arkansas is 40th in points allowed, and they haven't exactly played against offensive juggernauts.
Arkansas has an excellent passing game. That has carried them this season. They are 12th in the nation in passing yards.
However, against top defenses, this passing game can be neutralized. Arkansas is in prime position for a big-time bowl game, and they are in prime position to get destroyed.
No. 20 Nebraska
Nebraska has lost 45-17 to Michigan and 48-17 to Wisconsin. Neither team is in the Top 10. This is not something that teams worthy of being in the Top 20 have happen to them.
Nebraska is a lackluster 41st in both points allowed and points scored per game.
Their defense has allowed 27 or more points in five games. They struggle to stop the pass, and if this team can't run the ball, they get killed.
They are 13th in rushing yards and 104th in passing yards. They aren't headed towards a BCS Bowl game, but they are still headed to a bowl game against a team far better than they are.
