BCS Standings 2011: Projected Rankings for Week 13's Biggest Losers
There wasn't as much chaos in Week 13 as there was the previous weekend, but there were still a couple teams who suffered crushing losses. Now the question becomes, where will those teams land when the new BCS rankings are released? Let's examine.
No. 3 Arkansas Razorbacks
Arkansas was able to hang with LSU for awhile before the Tigers pulled away in the fourth quarter, further illustrating their dominance. After spending a week dreaming about a BCS National Championship Game trip, the Razorbacks will likely be relegated to a lower bowl.
They might deserve better since their only losses came against Alabama and LSU, but losing their regular season finale without a conference title game to make up ground leaves them in a precarious position. As the old saying goes, to be the best, you have to beat the best. Arkansas failed twice.
Projected Ranking: No. 9
No. 17 Clemson Tigers
Clemson's loss actually hurts Virginia Tech more than the Tigers. The Hokies needed Clemson to be ranked as high as possible heading into their ACC Championship Game clash so they could move up the BCS pecking order.
Instead, the Tigers got throttled by South Carolina and will drop a couple more spots. After an 8-0 start, they've lost three of four games, including two against unranked foes. It's been a quick fall from grace after a lot of talk about a possible undefeated season in late October.
Projected Ranking: No. 20
No. 19 Penn State Nittany Lions
Football remains secondary at Penn State in the short term, but that doesn't lessen the heartbreak after watching a possible BCS bowl bid slip through the team's fingers vs. Wisconsin. The Nittany Lions were no match for Heisman candidate Montee Ball and the Badgers offense.
Even though all of Penn State's losses came against Top 20 teams, the team didn't pick up any marquee wins over a ranked opponent to boost its résumé. Regardless of results, the football season will only be a footnote in the story of 2011 at Penn State.
Projected Ranking: No. 23
