2011 NBA Free Agents: Potential Landing Spots for Most Underrated UFAs
Most of the free agent hype will surround names like Nene, Tyson Chandler, David West and Jason Richardson. After that first wave of players, there are still some underrated free agents that can help teams without breaking the bank. For example, these three players will provide terrific value.
Samuel Dalembert
Dalembert is basically a cheaper version of Chandler. He's a solid defender who has shown good durability throughout his career. He averaged eight points and rebounds to go along with more than a block per game in just 24 minutes per game last season.
He'd be a nice fit alongside Amar'e Stoudemire in New York. The Knicks are still waiting for the third piece of their trifecta to match Miami but, if they've learned anything from the Heat, it's that depth is important. Dalembert would serve that purpose.
Best Fit: New York Knicks
Shane Battier
Battier served as a calming influence on a young Memphis team last season during their surprising playoff run. The Duke product isn't flashy, but he's going to be sturdy on the defensive end and take care of the ball on the offensive while providing leadership.
Several teams could use him because he should come at a reasonable price, but the Spurs seem like a nice fit. Richard Jefferson has been a massive disappointment and San Antonio’s championship window is closing, so they can't afford to wait any longer for him to start producing.
Best Fit: San Antonio Spurs
Carl Landry
Landry would be getting a lot more respect on the national level if he was a better rebounder. However, he showed two years ago that he has 18 and seven potential if given enough playing time. With so many teams in need of big men, Landry should have no trouble finding a new home.
The Indiana Pacers are an intriguing destination for Landry. Indiana has a lot of good, young pieces that are starting to gel into a pretty formidable team. The former second-round pick would fit perfectly into a rotation with Tyler Hansbrough and Roy Hibbert.
