BCS Rankings: Penn State and Programs That Choked Their BCS Dreams Away

Donald WoodNov 27, 2011

While many teams have continued their dominance on college football, other programs have faltered and choked away their dreams of contending for a serious BCS bowl berth.

Teams like Penn State had the opportunity to become a serious BCS threat, but choked away their chance at glory with a terrible performance in Week 13.

The following teams came up as small as they possibly could this week, and subsequently blew their chance of being anywhere near relevant come bowl selection time.

Penn State

The Penn State Nittany Lions are the definition of down and out right now, and it doesn’t look to be getting better any time soon.

With the season on the line against the Wisconsin Badgers, Penn State got beat down. The 45-7 loss was one of the worst endings to a heartbreaking story.

The Nittany Lions will not be in contention for the Big Ten championship. If they play in a bowl, it will be a secondary bowl at best.

Georgia Tech

In what could have been the defining moment for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, the team was beaten down by in state rival, the Georgia Bulldogs.

The elite running game that made them relevant all season failed them when they needed it most, leaving Georgia there to pick apart the terrible Yellow Jackets defense.

With this loss, Georgia tech moves to 8-4 and will more than likely drop out of the BCS Top 25. Not the way they wanted to end the season.

Clemson

At one point during this season, the Clemson Tigers sat at 8-0 and were serious threats to a BCS championship. It was a meeting at equally overrated Georgia Tech team that ruined their season.

The Tigers went on to lose three of their next four games, including the regular season finale against South Carolina.

Clemson could have shocked the world and made a bid to be the top two-loss team in the nation, but instead will be relegated to the bottom half of the BCS Top 25.
