Why Jay Cutler Injury Absolutely Dooms Chicago Bears

Jon DoveNov 27, 2011

The Chicago Bears are on a five-game winning streak, with impressive victories over the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles. This five-game winning streak has but the Bears in prime playoff position. However, the recent injury to Jay Cutler has really put this team in a tough position.

Cutler was in the middle of a very impressive season, where he was playing arguably the best football of his career. The numbers don't suggest a great season, but it's the way that he ran the offense. Each week, Cutler proved that he might be the only quarterback capable of succeeding with this offense.

Chicago's offense lacks strong offensive line play and a top-level receiving talent. Even with improvements, Cutler was constantly facing pressure and hurried throws. However, he still managed to move the offense, despite consistently being under duress.

Cutler is often criticized for his poor throwing mechanics, but that is due to not having a clean pocket. He needs to make some really unorthodox throws in order to avoid a sack. I honestly feel that Jay Cutler is the only quarterback capable of finding success in this offense.

Like it or not, the Chicago Bears need to go forward with Caleb Hanie as their starting quarterback. Hanie has only attempted 34 career passes, with 20 of those coming in last year's NFC Championship Game. During that game, Hanie made some nice plays, but also had two key interceptions.

The only hope the Bears have is if Hanie finds a way to protect the football. He needs to make good decisions and let his defense win games. Chicago has proven that their defense and special teams are more than capable of winning football games.

One necessary skill Hanie possesses is his ability to escape the pocket. Hanie is capable of avoiding the rush and extending plays. He is going to need to use his athleticism to make up for the issues on the Bears' offensive line.
