Bowl Projections: Houston Will Earn BCS Spot over Superior Boise State Team

Michael DixonNov 26, 2011

It may or may not be fair, but it's a fact. If you play in a conference that's not the ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 or SEC, you have to go undefeated to make a BCS game. Sometimes, even that doesn't do it.

Boise State didn't go undefeated this year. They dropped a stunning home game to TCU and while they sit at No. 7 in the BCS, the Broncos will need an awful lot of help to be considered for a BCS game.

That's not the case with Houston. Although they are a spot below Boise State in the rankings, ESPN's Mark Schlabach and Brad Edwards both project Houston to reach the Sugar Bowl. Take a look below, so do I.

But let's actually compare Houston to Boise State.

Conference-USA is hardly a daunting conference. While you can't ask for anyone to go through it any better than Houston did, note that their best win came early in the season against UCLA. That was a four-point win.

While the Bruins are the Pac-12 South champions, they are not anywhere near the Top 25.

Georgia's clearly a Top 25 team. Boise State beat them in Georgia by two touchdowns. Yes, I know it's just one game, but it goes a little deeper.

While the Mountain West Conference is not particularly strong, it's far better than the Conference-USA.

But let's even look a little beyond that. Who has Michigan beaten that's on par with Georgia? The Big Ten isn't exactly a top conference this season.

And while this can't be changed this year, when can the BCS revisit the notion of the ACC and the Big East getting automatic berths?

Ideally, the BCS should have the 10 best teams in the country as a part of it. I know that deviates, but it shouldn't deviate that much.

Boise State really belongs. The worst thing of all of this is that they will end up going to a bowl game and winning by four touchdowns.

The entire bowl scene would be better if they were a part of it.
