LSU vs. Arkansas: Tigers Overcome Slow Start To Rout Razorbacks

Josh SchochNov 25, 2011

In arguably the most highly anticipated matchup of the year, the LSU Tigers hosted the Arkansas Razorbacks today, winning 41-17.

After a scoreless first quarter, the scoring began when Tyler Wilson completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jarius Wright six seconds into the second quarter. The Razorbacks took a 7-0 lead and had momentum on their side.

On the ensuing drive, LSU's Michal Ford ran the ball and was hit hard by Arkansas' Tramain Thomas. The ball flew into the air and was caught by Ark Alonzo who returned the fumble 47 yards to the house to give Arkansas a 14-0 lead and some serious momentum.

However, LSU isn't ranked the No. 1 team in the nation for nothing, and they found a way to come back.

The Tigers drove the field and scored with 5:15 left in the second quarter on a six-yard run by Kenny Hilliard for a touchdown, cutting the lead to seven.

The Tigers then stopped the Razorbacks and forced a punt. The Honey Badger, Tyrann Mathieu, fielded the punt at his own eight and took it back 92 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 14 and giving the Tigers the momentum.

Continuing their dominance, LSU stopped Arkansas and then drove 66 yards in 60 seconds, capped off by a nine-yard touchdown pass thrown by Jordan Jefferson to Russell Shepard to give the Tigers a 21-14 lead at the half.

Arkansas came out in the second half and kicked a field goal to cut the deficit to four, but they then surrendered two touchdowns and two field goals to go down 41-17.

The Tigers won by that score, and the MVP was clearly the Honey Badger, Mathieu, who had seven tackles, a punt return for a touchdown, forced two fumbles, recovered a fumble and had an interception.

The Tigers proved that they are the best team in the nation, beating No. 3-ranked Arkansas by a whopping 24 points.

Despite their slow start, the Tigers proved their dominance once again and essentially secured a spot in the national championship game.
