Arkansas vs. LSU: 5 Reasons Tigers Will Dominate Razorbacks for SEC West Title

Nick KostoraNov 25, 2011

The LSU Tigers are a better football team than the Arkansas Razorbacks.

This No. 1 vs. No. 3 matchup seems close on paper, as Arkansas has a potent offense, averaging 463 yards per game.

The problem stems from the fact that the LSU defense is easily one of the best in the country, allowing only 10 points per game.

Arkansas may have an outside shot at the national title if they win this game, but LSU practically secures its position in the championship with a victory,

Here are five reasons LSU will beat Arkansas.

5. Arkansas Defense

1 of 5

The Arkansas defense is not good enough to slow down the attack of the LSU offense.

The Razorbacks have allowed 31 touchdowns this season and give up 360 yards per game.

This can make a mediocre passing game like the one the Tigers possess seem extraordinary.

Jordan Jefferson looked great last week against Ole Miss, completing all seven of his pass attempts for 88 yards and a touchdown.

And that is supposedly LSU's offensive weakness.

The Tigers' passing game ranks just 103rd in the country.

Their rushing attack, however, ranks 19th and has two running backs with over 600 yards this season.

Arkansas cannot allow over 350 yards in this game and expect to beat LSU.

4. Beating Alabama

2 of 5

LSU beat the Alabama Crimson Tide earlier in the season. Arkansas lost to Alabama.

This math almost never equates to a successful conclusion (LSU will automatically beat Arkansas because they beat Alabama)—but in this case it's true.

The way that Arkansas was embarrassed by the Crimson Tide by a score of 38-14 shows how susceptible they are to a great defense.

The Razorbacks had just 209 yards passing in that game and 17 rushing yards.

LSU's offense was similarly abysmal against the Alabama defense, gaining 239 yards of offense.

So what's the difference?

LSU held Alabama to only six points.

3. Nobody Can Score on LSU

3 of 5

The LSU defense ranks second in the nation, allowing just 10 points a game. Ten!

Arkansas may have a prolific offense and may throw for over 300 yards on most occasions, but that will not happen against Morris Claiborne and the LSU secondary.

Claiborne alone has four interceptions this season and the team as a whole has snagged 15 passes.

Without Knile Davis, the Razorbacks' running game is almost nonexistent, ranking 72nd in the country with just 146 total yards per game.

A one-dimensional offense will not be good enough to beat the top team in the nation.

2. The Game Is in Death Valley

4 of 5

If this showdown were taking place in Fayetteville, then perhaps the Razorbacks would have more of a fighting chance.

But to think they can go into Death Valley with the SEC West and LSU's chance at a national championship on the line is simply absurd.

Arkansas is not an incapable team—they are ranked No. 3 in the country for a reason. But LSU is beating teams by an average of 30 points at home this season.

Meetings between these teams are usually close, but this is a tough game in which to favor Arkansas.

1. Arkansas Has Had Struggles Getting to This Game

5 of 5

LSU has dominated opponents all season en route to an undefeated record.

Arkansas has taken a rockier road.

The Razorbacks had to come back from halftime deficits in order to beat Mississippi and Vanderbilt, and they were in a tight game with the Texas A&M Aggies.

Meanwhile, LSU has trailed for less than 20 minutes of game action all season.

This is an imposing football team with a national championship berth hanging in the balance.

The Tigers will beat the Razorbacks.
