This season could see as many as five teams— Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United—fighting out for the last two Champions League places.

All the teams in the Premiership will be looking to make the right decisions in the January transfer window, and need to add the right players who could improve the quality of their side. They will be keen to retain their best players: It would present them with the best opportunity of achieving their aim this season.

There have been plenty of transfer gossip in the newspapers and football sites in the previous few weeks. Here are some of the latest transfer rumors on deals that could possibly happen.

Could Real Madrid's Ricardo Kaka Move to Chelsea?

1 of 12

Chelsea have endured a bad run of form: They have dropped below the top four places and they also need a positive result against Valencia in the Champions League in order to ensure qualification to the Round of 16.

With their manager Andre Villas-Boas looking for inspiration from his team, he could splash the cash to sign Real Madrid’s Ricardo Kaka (a former world footballer of the year), in order to bring more creativity and confidence to the team.

Kaka was signed for a huge fee by Madrid, but injuries and loss of form has meant that he has not been a major player for Madrid in the last two seasons. However, the 29-year-old midfielder seemed to be getting back to his best this season before he was again injured for a short time.

With many young talented midfielders like Mesut Ozil and Nuri Sahin in the Madrid side, they could offload Kaka in order to sell him at a decent price.

Chelsea and Tottenham To Compete for the Signing of Bolton's Gary Cahill

2 of 12

According to The Sun, Chelsea and Tottenham are interested in signing Bolton and England defender Gary Cahill, who will have only six months left on his contract.

The defender attracted the attention of some clubs in the summer, but manager Owen Coyle and the chairman refused to sell him below their evaluation of the English international. However, with Bolton not performing well in the league and in lot of financial trouble, they might try to recoup whatever they can get from Cahill’s transfer instead of letting him on a free transfer.

Chelsea have had plenty of problems in defense this season. With no solid partner for John Terry, they could look to sign Cahill, who has partnered him on international duty.

However, they will have to face competition from Spurs, who also have injury worries relating to Ledley King and William Gallas, and Cahill could provide a good option for the side.

Real Madrid's Esteban Granero "Desperate" To Join the Gunners?

3 of 12

Arsenal lost two of their best midfielders in Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in the summer, and did struggle early in the season due to injuries and the loss of key players.

However, they have recovered well from the early setbacks and have found their form with new signings Mikel Arteta, Gervinho and Per Mertesacker playing an important role in the team.

The Gunners’ manager Arsene Wenger do needs to add depth to the side for which he could target Real Madrid’s Esteban Granero, according to the Mirror.

Though Granero is a talented midfielder, he has not been able to get much playing time at Madrid, which might be the reason why he could be inclined to a move to the Emirates. Madrid have several quality midfielders, and could let the midfielder leave in January for a cut-price move worth around £5 million.

5 of 12

According to TalksportChelsea could be interested in Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, who was targeted by former Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti before Brazilian defender David Luiz was signed by the club.

Though Chelsea spent considerable money on Luiz, he has not provided solidity to the defense and has been culpable for some of the defensive frailties of Chelsea this season under Andre-Villas Boas.

Godin, who is valued at around £15 million, has not had contact with Chelsea, but could be interested in a move to Stamford Bridge. The Uruguayan international could be a solid addition to the team and Villas-Boas could target him to solve Chelsea’s defensive woes.

"

7 of 12

8 of 12

Though his teammate Marco Reus has garnered the attention of top clubs with impressive performances, he will not be available at a bargain. But Herrmann could present great value for money.

Borussia Monchengladbach will be reluctant to lose the services of one of their talented young players, but the player could be enticed by the prospect of playing for a big club early in his career. 9 of 12

Liverpool have made significant progress under manager Kenny Dalglish, but they have been inconsistent this season. Samba would add more defensive stability to the team, which is essential in beating bottom-half teams. He could be a good value for around £10 million.

Manchester City Target Napoli's Edinson Cavani, Marek Hamsik, Ezequiel Lavezzi?

10 of 12

Manchester City are one of the richest clubs in the world, and they do have the finances to sign many big players. They did add several quality players in the summer—Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero. According to the PeopleManchester City’s scout Carlo Cancellieri has revealed that the club is interested in three Napoli stars—Edinson Cavani, Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

But with City being beaten by Napoli in Italy, there is little chance that the trio could be interested in a move to Manchester in January, especially since they have good chance of progressing to the next stage in the Champions League.

Cavani, Lavezzi and Hamsik have all been excellent for Napoli in the recent past and they could be targeted by other top European clubs as well.

FC Barcelona Interested in Arsenal Winger Theo Walcott?

12 of 12

According to Caught Offside, Barcelona could be interested in a move for Arsenal and England winger Theo Walcott, who has been one of the key players in the Gunners’ resurgence this season.

The winger has been criticized by many for his decision making, but he has shown considerable improvement in the last couple of seasons and has established himself as a starter for the Gunners.

With only two years left on his contract, he could be a target for FC Barcelona, who recently signed his friend and former captain Cesc Fabregas. Walcott has performed quite well against the Blaugrana and has interested the Spanish giants because of his direct pace and improvement in the end product.

However, Wenger has played a great role in his improvement and will be keen for the England winger to extend his contract and continue to progress at the Emirates.
