Urban Meyer: Former Florida Coach Would Put Ohio State Back on Road to Greatness

Urban Meyer has reportedly agreed to a contract to become Ohio State's next football coach, according Orlando's CBS affiliate WKMG. The former Florida coach has since denied the report. However, he remains the best choice to turn the Buckeyes program around after a season of turmoil.

According to Sports Director David Pingalore's sources, Meyer has agreed to a seven-year, $40 million deal. (…)

Sources told Pingalore that Meyer will bring several current UF assistant coaches with him to Columbus, including D.J. Durkin, the Gators' linebackers coach, who will be the OSU defensive coordinator.

Meyer spent six seasons with the Gators, leading the program to two national championships. He went 5-1 in bowl games and was consistently bringing in solid recruiting classes. All told, he was one of college football's elite coaches.

That's exactly what Ohio State needs to get its program back to the top.

After last offseason's controversy that forced Jim Tressel to resign from his post as Buckeyes head coach, there has been a lot of speculation about who will fill the void full time. Whoever it is will need to shoulder a lot of pressure, something Meyer has shown he's capable of doing.

Ohio State remains one of the nation's most prestigious football schools despite the memorabilia scandal, so Meyer wouldn't be walking onto a sinking ship.

His first order of business would be restoring faith in the school among potential recruits. Judging by his relationship with past stars like Tim Tebow, Meyer has a likability factor that will truly resonate throughout the Ohio State community.

It would also be a proving ground for both himself and the school.

Ohio State wants to show it's still a premier destination for athletes and that committing to the school won't have any negative affects on a student-athlete. And Meyer wants to illustrate he can still dominate the college game.

There is no official agreement in place yet, but it certainly seems like a match made in heaven for all parties involved.
