Week 12 Waiver Wire: Kevin Smith and Others to Add

Ryan PhillipsNov 22, 2011

Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith exploded in Week 11, coming out of nowhere to make himself a big-time fantasy option. He leads this week's list of guys you need to add.

Working as the team's lead back after being signed just two weeks ago, Smith rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on just 16 carries against the Panthers on Sunday. He also snagged four receptions for 61 more yards and another score. His 201 yards and three touchdowns on just 20 touches was incredible, especially considering he was unsigned three weeks ago.

Expect Smith to continue to work as Detroit's top running back with Jahvid Best still out as the result of a concussion. Even when Best does come back, Smith will still be in line for carries if he keeps up this pace. If someone else hasn't snatched him, grab the Lions' new No. 1 back as soon as possible.

With rookie receiver A.J. Green out on Sunday, Jerome Simpson was able to grab a season-high eight catches for 152 yards during the Cincinnati Bengals' loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Simpson was targeted 13 times by quarterback Andy Dalton, showing that the young signal-caller has faith in the 25-year-old out of Coastal Carolina.

Simpson had five catches for 88 yards in the fourth quarter alone, and he also had two grabs of 40-plus yards. It was his third 100-yard game of the season as well.

While Green is expected to be back in Week 12, Simpson is still likely to see targets as the Bengals try to take some pressure off their rookie wideout. If you're in need at the wide receiver spot Simpson is a very solid option.

Another guy you should consider grabbing is Houston Texans quarterback Matt Leinart. The 2004 Heisman Trophy winner is likely to be Houston's starting quarterback for the remainder of the season as Matt Schaub is out with a foot injury.

While Leinart has not had a successful professional career to date, he has never really been given a chance to shine. With a phenomenal offense like Houston's surrounding him, I'm very optimistic of what he can do. He may struggle at times, but in a run-first offense with excellent weapons in the passing game, the Texans can pick their spots to let Leinart throw the ball.

The USC product reportedly looked great in training camp and knows the team's offense very well. While he's certainly not Schaub, he could be a high-upside pickup if you're weak at the quarterback spot. Grab him now because if he plays well this weekend you won't have a second chance.
