Manchester City: Why City Must Translate League Form to Europe

Sam TigheNov 22, 2011

As it stands, Manchester City remain the only unbeaten team in the English Premier League.

Their impressive domestic form has allowed them to open up a gap at the top of the table, but they have often failed to impress during their Champions League group stage fixtures.

The draw at home to Napoli, putting the Citizens in a tough situation as they now fight the Italian team directly for second spot in the group behind the seemingly unstoppable Bayern Munich.

Just how important is it to maintain domination on both fronts?

Here are four reasons why Manchester City needs to lose the shackles and play their confident, expansive game on big European nights.

World Profile

Success in Europe is vitally important in order for Manchester City to raise their global profile.

UEFA Champions League games are amongst the most hotly contested in the world and attract millions and millions of viewers for a variety of countries.

For Manchester City to embark upon a long European run this season will be a tough challenge but it isn't beyond them.

Should they succeed in making the quarterfinals or even further, more and more people around the world will take note of the name.

Europe Will Take Them Seriously

Right now, Manchester City's league form is so fierce that no team in England underestimates the damage they can do.

In Europe, however, they aren't sold.

Until away at Villarreal, the Citizens were unable to dominate a game on the European stage and bowed out early last season in the UEFA Europa League.

The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona won't be too worried right now but in a few months time the situation could be very different.

Extra Credibility in the EPL

Every team that travels to the Etihad Stadium does so in fear.

Manchester City look unbeatable at present, and if they were to take a major European scalp they would become even more formidable.

As if beating close rivals Manchester United 6-1 wasn't enough, a win against Bayern Munich in December could potentially seal their reputation as one of the best sides in the world right now.

With Chelsea reeling, they won't look forward to welcoming the Citizens to Stamford Bridge should they beat the German heavyweights five days earlier.

Belief for the Players

4 of 4

The players are still a bit shaky whilst playing in the UEFA Champions League.

Despite them dominating in the English Premier League, the nerves strike in Europe and they are far from impressive at times.

They battered Villarreal at El Madrigal but looked far from convincing in taking on Napoli at home and Bayern Munich away.

If City can go on an extended run and transfer their domestic form over to Europe it won't be long before the players find their feet and truly make a name for themselves.

This will instill the belief that they can match the best in the world and subsequently assist them in their efforts to grind out a title winning campaign.
