Yankees Not Looking to sign Ben Sheets Anymore?

I am happy about this news. If Andy Pettitte is speaking the truth when he says he wants to be a Yankee, then he would be the best fit for the team. Give him $10-12 million for one year, and than let him go after that. Why would we want to lock up all of the spots in the rotation for multiple years? It isn’t very smart.

Hughes could take the 5th spot in the rotation next year after Andy leaves the Bronx. Ben Sheets injury problems are the Yankees main concerns. He has had a history of back ailments during his career. Phil Hughes could take the job if they don’t get either Pettitte or Sheets. I wouldn’t mind that either. Hughes might really shine this year. You never know what might happen.

From Hardball (Joel Sherman):

"

1. Keep hearing from multiple sources that the New York Yankeeswill have nothing to do with Ben Sheets. They have real concerns about his health, especially they fret about the righty’s history with back ailments.

The Yankee theory is they already have taken their health gamble by investing in A.J. Burnett for five years. But they feel that Burnett turned a corner last offseason and created a program between starts that enabled him to pitch 221 1/3 innings.

The fear, of course, is that Burnett was serious last season because it set him up for the big free-agent bucks and that now he will revert to a much more untrustworthy state.
