WWE Survivor Series 2011: WWE Screws The Rock and John Cena

Adam WellsNov 21, 2011

When The Rock announced that he was going to return to wrestle at the Survivor Series, it was widely assumed that this match would lead to something bigger between himself and his WrestleMania opponent John Cena. Instead, WWE did the worst thing possible—nothing.

That’s right: Rock just pinned The Miz clean in the middle of the ring following a People’s Elbow, which was no big deal. But then after that, Rock called Cena back into the ring and the tension started to build because we had basically been told that something was going to happen.

What happened was they had a pose-down in the middle of the ring, with Rock getting cheered and Cena getting booed. Rock said something to Cena, who replied in kind and the Rock delivered a Rock Bottom. End of show.

What are we supposed to be paying to see when Rock and Cena lock horns once in five months? Rock getting revenge on Cena? Cena getting revenge on Rock? Something that I am missing?

We have seen Cena lay out the Rock prior to WrestleMania this past year. Rock laid out Cena at WrestleMania and at Survivor Series. There is no story, no buzz, no good build for this match-up.

All that WWE can sell us on is Rock is wrestling again at WrestleMania and this time it happens to be against Cena. We are paying just to see the names instead of the story.

Since Rock’s name is involved, the match will be big. But, sadly, it could be huge; it could be the biggest money match in WWE history. As things stand right now, though, it is just another match with two big stars in it.

WWE makes booking seem a lot harder than it is. The whole tease for this show was, "What will happen between Cena and Rock in their match?" Aside from Cena distracting the referee during  a pinfall attempt early in the match, nothing important happened during the match.

We already talked about what happened after the match. The Road to WrestleMania was supposed to begin last night but if this is a taste of what’s to come, this show is going to do a fraction of the business that it should.

For those of you that want to give WWE the benefit of the doubt, I wonder how you have faith in this company doing anything right. It hasn’t happened in years, and the end of the Survivor Series featuring Rock and Cena only further re-iterated that point.
