Report: Seattle Mariners Outfielder Greg Halman Stabbed to Death

Alex KayNov 21, 2011

According to Dutch police, Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was fatally attacked in a stabbing incident on Monday morning.

Halman’s brother, Jason, a professional baseball player as well, has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The stabbing was reported at around 5:30 a.m. local time in Rotterdam, Netherlands, which is approximately 50 miles from the Halman’s home city of Haarlem.

Rotterdam Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels said that law enforcement rushed to scene to deal with a reported stabbing in a house when they found a badly injured Halman.

The 24-year-old outfielder was unsuccessfully resuscitated and he was soon pronounced dead. NOS TV, a part of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting system, confirmed with Greg’s family that he indeed passed away.

Halman had been playing professional baseball since he was 16 years old in the Dutch league and eventually caught the eye of MLB scouts.

In 44 games over the last two seasons, Halman hit .207 with two home runs and six RBI as a member of the Mariners.

Jason, who was arrested as a suspect, had not yet made the major leagues and has been bouncing around the Dutch professional league for some time now. He has ties with L&D Amsterdam Pirates, Instant Holland Almere ’90, ADO and most recently Corendon Kinheim.

He is just being questioned according to Wessels and nothing is for sure as the investigation continues.

"He is under arrest and right now he is being questioned," Wessels told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "It will take some time to figure out what exactly happened."

I hope for the Halman family’s sake, this tragedy is figured out and laid to rest sooner than later.

It is awful that someone with so much potential was taken so early.
