BCS Rankings: Which Elite Teams Are on Upset Alert in Week 13?

Tim DanielsNov 21, 2011

After a chaotic week of college football, the BCS rankings have been released and everybody knows exactly where they stand with just a couple weeks to go. Here are three Top 10 teams that are on upset alert heading into next weekend.

No. 5 Virginia Tech Hokies

Virginia Tech has climbed into the Top 5 following a six-game winning streak dating back to early October. The Hokies have used a balanced offensive attack and an underrated defense to push themselves within one win of the ACC Coastal Division crown.

It won't be an easy win to secure, though, as they face off with rival Virginia on Saturday. The Cavaliers have quietly moved into BCS contention with impressive wins over Georgia Tech and Florida State. They will also be looking to end an seven-year drought in the Commonwealth Cup.

Prediction: Virginia Tech survives.

No. 6 Stanford Cardinal

Stanford just got off upset alert against California on Saturday and will be right back on it next weekend. The Cardinal haven't looked as dominant over the past month, mostly because of shaky defense that has been exposed in Pac-12 play.

On the other hand, Notre Dame has won eight of its nine games and might finally be living up to the preseason hype. The Fighting Irish have struggled with turnovers, but have enough talent to hang with the nation's elite when they avoid those blunders.

Prediction: Notre Dame pulls off the upset.

No. 8 Houston Cougars

No team was happier to see the craziness of Week 12 than Houston. The Cougars continue to climb up the BCS ladder thanks to losses from power conference squads. Their schedule obviously doesn't match up with that of an LSU or Alabama, but staying undefeated is nothing to take lightly.

They will face a big test against Tulsa, which is also undefeated in Conference USA play. It appears the Golden Hurricane are peaking at the right time after scoring at least 50 points in back-to-back weeks. Look for an exciting shootout that will really benefit Houston if they prevail.

Prediction: Houston's BCS dreams continue.
