WWE Survivor Series 2011: Looking over the Event and Handing out Awards

Jo-Jo CarvinNov 20, 2011

This is something I just came up with minutes ago and I thought, why not give it a shot?

I will be giving various awards in different categories to the superstars and divas of the WWE in regards to their work at Survivor Series. If this article is well-received, I might as well do this at the end of every WWE pay-per-view.

The awards that we will be considering the WWE talent for include:

  • Mark-Out Moment
  • Overachiever of the Night: This award goes to the superstar(s) in the undercard who put up a stunning performance.
  • Underachiever of the Night: This award goes to the superstar(s) who did not perform up to expectations, even if they had a good match. This award can go to any competitor, upper or undercard.
  • Superstar of the Night: This is a kayfabe award and goes to the superstar who had an all-around incredible night.
  • Butt of the Night: This is a kayfabe award and goes to the superstar who had the worst night.
  • Finishing Touch: This is awarded to the finishing maneuver that ended up having the most impact on the course of the show. The maneuver doesn't have to win a match to be considered, although that always helps.
  • Question Mark Moment: Simply, this is a moment that made me go, "Huh?"
  • Match of the Night

That being said, I must point out that all these awards are based on my opinion, so please don't throw pitchforks and torches at me in case you disagree with one of my choices (trust me, it's going to happen). You are free to sound off at the comment section below on what you feel and who you would have picked.

Mark-out Moment of the Night: Beth Phoenix Glam Slams Eve from the Second Rope

1 of 8

Look at that picture and tell me your interest did not peak when Beth locked Eve in the Chickenwing for the Glam Slam. Immediately Beth brought her competitor crashing down to the mat, and we all knew it—Beth was going to retain.

The Sisters of Destruction were no joke. And Eve was probably somewhere in the land of pink alligators.

Good job to both women for attempting a spot this risky. God knows how bad it could have been if it came off botched and Eve landed awkwardly. Best-case scenario, Eve broke a nail. Worst case...(shiver.)

  • CM Punk becomes a three-time WWE champion.
  • The Rock drives his elbow into The Miz's chest for his first pinfall victory in seven years.

Overachiever of the Night: Dolph Ziggler

2 of 8

"How damn good am I?!"

Pretty good, Dolph Ziggler. Pretty damn good.

The match between Ziggler and Morrison has got to be my favorite pay-per-view opening match in a while. Both men were outstanding, but in the end, it was Ziggler who left me on my feet clapping furiously as he celebrated a win. Although he did eat an RKO later that night and got eliminated first in his Survivor Series matchup, I am still in mild awe of how beautiful a match he put up earlier.

Looking at this win, Ziggler has held the United States Title for more than half a year now. That is incredible, especially in our day when titles are constantly flying from one waist to another.

  • Wade Barrett
  • Cody Rhodes
  • Hunico

Underachievers of the Night: The Big Show and Mark Henry

3 of 8

There are two sides to storylines—great segments and great matches. The segments up to this showdown between two these behemoths were beautiful. This match...ugh.

Many people attribute the awesomeness of their last pay-per-view match to the final spot, but I beg to differ. Yes, that spot was epic stuff, but they actually put up an interesting match before that, to my complete shock. Based on how watchable their last match was, they had no excuse for putting on the dreck that we had to sit through during the pay-per-view.

The NYC crowd was even bored to the point that they began chanting, "Boring!" Sad, really.

Superstar of the Night: The Rock

4 of 8

If you smell the obviousness of this choice!

The Rock managed to get the crowd chanting, "You still got it" at one point in his match. And that crowd was right. The Rock hasn't missed a beat in all seven years of his absence. In fact, I dare say he schooled Cena a bit in the ways of technicality. Watch, Fruit Loop Overlord, and learn.

The Rock not only managed to have a good match, he also pinned The Miz. It's like he never left.

  • CM Punk
  • Wade Barrett

Butt of the Night: John Cena

5 of 8

John Cena could only smile weakly as the night got worse and worse for him.

First he gets booed incessantly by a rabid MSG crowd. He then spends a good deal of his match been beaten black and blue by Awesome Truth. He never gets the pinfall and ends up crawling up the ramp in pain at the end of the night after receiving a vicious Rock Bottom.

Yep. SuperCena didn't soar tonight.

It was so dire and so out of character that I even felt slightly sorry for Cena. Really, I dislike the guy, but I'm not a heartless monster. It will be interesting to see how he rebounds from this.

Close Contenders

  • Alberto del Rio
  • Awesome Truth

Finishing Touch of the Night: The People's Elbow

6 of 8

This award was really between The People's Elbow and Beth Phoenix's ridiculously awesome Glam Slam. But then, the Rock's Elbow signified the homecoming of a legend. It was the Rock's return to a ring that has missed him.

And we watched it, smiles on our faces, content to know that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was back where he belonged.

Close Contenders

  • Glam Slam
  • Wasteland
  • Anaconda Vice
  • Rock Bottom

Question Mark Moment of the Night: Big Show Crushing Mark Henry's Ankle

7 of 8

What happens to the World Heavyweight Title now? Will it be vacated? How will the No. 1 contenders be decided?

How long will Henry be out? Did his leg really get broken? What was Big Show thinking? Will Teddy Long do anything about this?

Where the deuce is Kane? Where the double deuce was Daniel Bryan? Was he still out cold? Wasn't that like the ultimate cash-in moment? Where is Edge when you need him to teach these noobs about cash-in moments?!

I guess what I'm trying to say is...what?!

(Very) Close Contenders

  • Sheamus (stupidly, might I add) getting himself disqualified during the Survivor Series match.
  • Sin Cara injuring himself in a very interesting botch.

Match of the Night: Tied

8 of 8

CM Punk vs. Alberto del Rio

A great contest with loads of drama and a truly memorable finish. What more could you ask for in a match? The last few minutes of this match were amazing.

Del Rio and Punk brought it and it was great to see Punk leave with the WWE title. Hopefully, he'll keep his promise and amp up interest in the company's premier title.

As for del Rio, heavens bless him, I hope he grows. The man has a lot of work to do to make himself relevant after this loss. First line of action will be to get better promo writers.

And by the way, did you hear the pop after Punk submitted del Rio?!

The Rock and John Cena vs. Awesome Truth

Was it the best technical conquest? Far from it. Did it tell the best story? Maybe. But heavens, this was an amazing match for one reason:

Finally, The Rock has come back...home.

The Rock and Cena did well in selling the fact that even if they were in a tag team, they were still enemies at heart. It is sad that Awesome Truth was knocked down a peg in this encounter, but really, the WWE wasn't going to let Dwayne lose his first match. Just wasn't going to happen.

In the end, this was a good match and a nice return for The Rock. I wonder how the end of this match will play out between The Rock and Cena.

Close Contenders

  • Team Orton vs. Team Barrett
  • Dolph Ziggler vs. John Morrison

And there it is, ladies and gentlemen—the Survivor Series 2011 Awards. I hope you enjoyed this, and feel free to comment below. Let me know what you thought of it, if you think it should go on and your opinions on the choices.

Thank you for reading and until next time, I am Jo-Jo, and I'm not that damn good.
