Michael Vick: Star QB Helps the Eagles More Sitting out

Kelly ScalettaNov 20, 2011

Micheal Vick is an outstanding quarterback; there's no question about that.

Being realistic, though, the reality is that it might be a blessing in disguise for him to be injured. After all, if the Eagles can't win with him, the chances of winning without him are considerably less.

Now you might be thinking I'm talking gibberish here, but let's be honest. The Eagles aren't going to be making the playoffs this year. They've already lost six games, and with losses to other teams in the Wild Card race—like the Chicago Bears—even if they win out, they aren't likely to make it.

Heck, even the Arizona Cardinals are ahead of them in the standings right now. I'm not "hating;" I'm being realistic. The Eagles aren't going to be in the playoffs, even if Vick does play.

That being the case, there are three reasons that it is beneficial for the Eagles to take their time bringing Vick back.

First, and most evident, is the health of Vick himself. The fewer games he gets clocked and clobbered, the better. Why put him in danger to simply miss the playoffs by fewer games? Why expose him to more injury?

In fact, losing now is good. It accomplishes two things. The Eagles don't need to "Suck for Luck" or even "Play snarkily for Barkley." They are set at QB.

That doesn't mean they don't improve their draft position and "Play Borin' for Claiborne." (Don't get too stuck on the player; I just was so proud of that rhyme I had to use it.)

Another thing they can do by finishing poorly is make their schedule next year that much easier. The worse their record, the worse the teams they play in 2013.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. It's not to say that the Eagles should play throw games intentionally, but they can make sure that Vick gets healthy before they bring him back. That alone should be enough to keep them from winning too many more games.
