BCS Rankings: Oklahoma State and Teams That Blew Their BCS Dreams

Donald WoodNov 20, 2011

We should have seen the anarchy that was coming on Saturday after Oklahoma State threw the first wrench into the works by losing on Friday night.

What followed was a Saturday full of parody, and I’m not just talking about Saturday Night Live.

Eight teams ranked in the BCS Top 25 lost this week. That means that the BCS selection show that usually is in a frenzy anyway will now be transformed into must-watch television all season.

The following teams really dropped the ball this week, and damaged their BCS Championship dreams beyond repair.

Oklahoma State

The talk around the water cooler has been about how the Oklahoma State Cowboys could be a legitimate threat to any team in the nation.

Those people forget to analyze the Cowboys' defense.

For any team to be successful, they have to excel on one side of the ball more than almost every team in the nation. OK State has an amazing offense.

What they don’t have is a defense that can stop the bleeding when the offense isn’t hitting on all cylinders.

That’s what cost them their BCS Championship dreams.

Oregon

With a loss to Pac-12 rival and BCS-unranked USC, the Oregon Ducks can take the case they were going to make for No. 2 in the country and throw it out the window.

An Oklahoma State loss on Thursday showed the Ducks that they could possibly slide past Alabama into the No. 2 spot in the nation with a huge win.

Not only will the Ducks drop in the standings and lose any hopes of playing in the BCS title game, there will be serious case made that USC should be ranked above Oregon.

Both teams are 9-2, and Oregon lost the head-to-head matchup.

Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners started off the season with the brightest of BCS hopes, but two heartbreaking losses will relegate them to a smaller, secondary bowl game.

There was legitimate hope that with losses from Oklahoma State and Oregon on Saturday that the Sooners would slide back up in the standings. There was a chance.

But when the Baylor Bears and Robert Griffin III broke the Sooners' hearts, any remaining BCS Championship dreams that were left were swept away—like so many times before.
