Ohio State Football: Urban Meyer Assembling Dream Staff?
If you haven't heard the swirling speculation that Urban Meyer is to be named the next head football coach for the Ohio State University, you're a little behind.
If this isn't mindboggling enough for you, the newest conjecture to be released is one that's incongruous, yet intriguing.
According to Sports Grid's website—among others—if Meyer were to sign with Ohio State (reportedly for around $35 million over seven years), he'd be handed a large budget to put together the coaching staff of his choice.
This would include headline names such as former Buckeye linebacker Chris Spielman, North Carolina State linebackers coach Jon Tenuta, LSU offensive line coach Greg Studwara and current College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit—one of football's most recognizable faces—to possibly coach the quarterbacks.
Wide receivers coach Stan Drayton would retain his position and Luke Fickell would most likely take over as defensive coordinator.
Since OSU was hit with multiple suspensions, the resignation of Jim Tressel and a potential 6-6 record (the first time since 1999), it has taken a huge hit in recruiting. The Buckeyes aren't even ranked in ESPN's College Football Top 25 Class Rankings for 2012, which is unfamiliar territory for such a prestigious program.
However, if household names such as Meyer, Herbstreit and Spielman join the staff, it's almost inevitable that recruiting would come with ease. With all due respect to coach Fickell, if I were a soon-to-be collegiate athlete, it'd be a lot more alluring if any of those three sat on my couch and attempted to persuade me to play for their team.
None of this is set in stone, obviously, and it's not for certain if Meyer will even be Ohio State's next football coach. But if anything is to happen, it's believed that the school (and Meyer) will wait to make an announcement after the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions hands down it verdict on OSU at the end of the month.
I'm sure Buckeye Nation is ready for some immediate change.
