UFC 139 Results: What We Learned from Stephan Bonnar vs Kyle Kingsbury
Light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar (14-7) will always have a place in the UFC, win or lose, and after his dominating performance against Kyle Kingsbury in the opening bout on the pay-per-view, he is showing that he is still growing as a mixed-martial-artist.
Bonnar won a unanimous decision with one of the judges scoring the bout 30-25 and the other two scoring it 30-27.
What We'll Remember About This Fight:
Bonnar was able to utilize his wrestling to control a physically imposing opponent, and he was able to do it for three rounds with continued success. Many didn't anticipate Bonnar to be the better wrestler, but they did see him being the more durable fighter.
What We Learned From Bonnar:
It wasn't his most standout performance, but it was one that shows "The American Psycho" has a reason for being in the UFC outside of being the finalist on the first season of the Ultimate Fighter. He still has what it takes to compete with the best of the up-and-comers and maybe can make a run back into fighting against the top 10.
What We Learned from Kingsbury:
Kingsbury had trouble keeping his distance on the feet, and he was controlled for three full rounds by Bonnar. It was a letdown of a fight for Kingsbury, who probably felt he had the wrestling and strength advantage going into the fight.
Like a lot of wrestlers, Kingsbury looked uncomfortable off his back, and the lack of a guard-game prevented him from being competitive and threatening from the position.
What's Next for Bonnar:
A good fight for Bonnar could be against Ryan Bader, who beat Jason Brilz on the undercard.
What's Next for Kingsbury:
With a four-fight win streak preceding this defeat, Kingsbury will have to restart his momentum and find fights on the undercards of upcoming UFC Fight Nights. There are no specific opponents for him, but the loser of the upcoming Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Alexander Gustafsson bout could be interesting.
