UFC 139 Results: What We Learned from Michael McDonald vs Alex Soto
Michael McDonald's walk to the octagon lasted longer than his bout against Alex Soto at UFC 139.
The highly-touted bantamweight prospect dropped Soto with a massive right hand and finished up with multiple unanswered punches at 0:56 of the first round.
What We'll Remember About This Fight:
Outside of a devastating finish, there wasn't much to take away from this bout.
McDonald pressed the action and landed the fight-ending right hand. Despite being in a drunken daze, Soto made every attempt to survive the onslaught, but McDonald proved to be too much, netting the first round knockout in just 56 seconds.
What We Learned from McDonald:
Currently riding a seven fight win streak, McDonald is really starting to turn heads in the bantamweight division.
He combines explosive striking with underrated submission skills. With the division crippled by Dominick Cruz's dominance, there is always a need for an infusion of fresh blood in the contender pool.
At only 20 years of age, the future is bright for McDonald.
What We Learned from Soto:
Soto dropped his hands and paid a tremendous price for it. Any fighter can get caught on any given night. Against a striker of McDonald's caliber, Soto picked the wrong fighter to make a mistake against.
What's Next for McDonald:
There shouldn't be any rushing a young prospect like McDonald. He was initially scheduled to face Johnny Eduardo at UFC 139, but an injury forced Eduardo off the card. Depending on Eduardo's progression, the UFC could opt to reschedule that bout.
What's Next for Soto:
If the UFC decides to move McDonald ahead, Eduardo would also be a good opponent for Soto. There are a plethora of options for the UFC in Soto's case.
Hopefully, he won't be offered up as a sacrifice for an upper-echelon stud in need of a rebound victory.
