BCS Rankings 2011: Why Oregon Doesn't Deserve a Rematch with LSU

Nicholas GossNov 19, 2011

The Oregon Ducks failed in their chance to beat the LSU Tigers in the opening week of the season and they do not deserve a rematch in the BCS title game in January.

With No. 2 Oklahoma State's upset loss to Iowa State on Friday night, the competition for the No. 2 spot in the BCS standings is wide open.

There are several teams with interesting cases for a berth in the national championship game, but only one of them truly deserves a shot at LSU, and that is their SEC rival Alabama.

Oregon only has one quality win, a road victory against No. 8 Stanford. But how is good Stanford? The Cardinal did not play any elite teams before Oregon.

Alabama has played Arkansas, who is currently ranked sixth in the country and, if anything, is  underrated. They also beat a good Penn State team early in the season, and the Crimson Tide defeated Florida.

Despite their disappointing record, the Gators are still better than most of the Pac-12 teams the Ducks will face this season.

If both teams win out then Alabama deserves their rematch with LSU more than Oregon. Alabama played a better game against LSU and only allowed the Tigers to score nine points.

The Tigers put up 40 points on the Ducks in Week 1. Even if it was the season's opening week and teams were not as good then as they are now, the Crimson Tide still allowed 31 points less.

If not for the several missed field goals by Alabama, LSU could easily have lost on November 5. Alabama also has a much better defense than Oregon and their running game is equally as dangerous.

There just isn't an argument strong enough against Alabama to not make the BCS title game if they win out. Their only loss was against the best team in the country in overtime by three points.

No matter how you look at the BCS title picture, there just is not a scenario where Oregon can leapfrog Alabama in the BCS standings if both teams win out.
