Penn State Scandal: Why Greg Schiano Should Leave Rutgers for State College
Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano should leave the Scarlet Knights to coach the Penn State Nittany Lions because he will never get another chance as good as this again.
Penn State has not had a coaching opening in almost 50 years, and the next coach they hire will likely be a big name who will get years to help repair the football program.
The new coach will probably be given time, which means if Schiano passes on the Nittany Lions now then he may never get another chance.
Schiano was a graduate assistant in State College in 1990 and coached the defensive backs from 1991-95.
He has turned Rutgers into a very respectable football program and is 66-66 all time with the Scarlet Knights. More impressive is his 4-1 bowl record at Rutgers.
Other top schools have been interested in Schiano before, but he has remained at Rutgers. Now is the time for him to leave because he has a once in a lifetime opportunity to rebuild Penn State and bring some integrity back to the program.
Schiano is a good young coach who can recruit well and has had no major problems at Rutgers. He is a charismatic guy who can lead the Nittany Lions into the future.
There is not much more for him to do at Rutgers. They won't compete for the national title any time soon and with the future of the Big East uncertain, the school might not have a chance to qualify for a BCS bowl in the future.
Schiano has been at Rutgers since 2001 and has had great success there, but it is time for a new challenge for him in his coaching career.
