WWE 12 Roster: 5 Dream Matches Upcoming Video Game Will Make Possible

Mike ChiariNov 18, 2011

After several stagnant years of the SmackDown vs. RAW franchise, THQ finally decided to rebrand its WWE video game. The result is WWE 12, which will hit shelves on Nov. 22.

In addition to tons of gameplay advancements, WWE 12 looks to have the most comprehensive roster in years. While there is still plenty of downloadable content yet to be announced, the roster that is readily available is fantastic. Not only does the game feature essentially every superstar and diva of importance currently in the WWE, but there are plenty of legends as well.

From The Rock, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Brock Lesnar to Arn Anderson, Vader and Demolition, WWE 12's roster should provide a very unique gameplay experience. The mix of present-day and legendary wrestlers is so great, in fact, that there is the potential to play out matches you never thought possible.

While some of these matches could still come to fruition if a legend decided to lace the boots back up (I'm looking at you Stone Cold), here are five dream matches that we may never see in real life, but can most certainly play out in WWE 12.

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin vs. Brock Lesnar

1 of 5

Prior to "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's transition from a wrestler to an auxiliary character in 2003, there were plans for him to take on Brock Lesnar.

Lesnar, who has since made a name for himself in UFC, was dubbed the "Next Big Thing" and had mowed down the competition, including legendary figures like The Rock and Hulk Hogan.

Austin was supposed to be next on the list, but he ultimately refused. There has been a lot of speculation with regards to Austin not wanting to put Lesnar over, but I think the true reason is that Austin wanted the match to take place at a high-profile pay-per-view rather than on an ordinary episode of RAW.

The match never happened ultimately, but in WWE 12 it most certainly can. Austin has been an extra character in WWE video games for quite some time, but this is Lesnar's first involvement with the company since leaving to pursue other interests in 2004.

With WWE 12 the controller is in your hands, so you're the head booker. There won't be any egos to get in the way, except yours, of course. If you always wanted to see Austin and Lesnar lock horns, then you can make it so come Nov. 22.

Don't count out the possibility of this particular match never taking place in real life, though. Even after the success that Lesnar has gained in mixed martial arts, he still talks about the match that never was between himself and Austin.

"

But looking back at one match, probably my most favorite match is the match that never happened. And that was the match that I was expecting to have with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. I was really looking forward to that match.

"

Daniel Bryan vs. Ricky Steamboat

2 of 5

This next match may not be between two of the biggest names or personalities in the history of wrestling, but if you like a complete, technically-sound and flawless wrestling match, then Daniel Bryan vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat is a dream match for you.

Bryan and Steamboat are two of the most well-rounded competitors in recent memory. Bryan is probably the best in-ring worker currently on the WWE roster as he honed his craft for many years overseas and on the independent circuit.

Steamboat is viewed as one of the all-time greats in terms of athletic ability and he is a former Intercontinental Champion. Steamboat was a part of what many consider to be the greatest match in WrestleMania history when he defeated Randy "Macho Man" Savage for the IC title at WrestleMania III in front of 93,000 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome.

Both superstars could wrestle circles around most of their peers, so it would be extremely interesting to see two of the best of their respective eras go at it in something like a 60-minute Iron Man match.

If you're a wrestling purist, then this is a match you have to play out on WWE 12 as both men are adept at mat wrestling, aerial assaults and even brawling. With both men in their primes, this would have the potential to be one of the best matches ever.

Legion of Doom vs. Edge & Christian

3 of 5

Few would argue with the notion that Hawk and Animal, the Legion of Doom, is the best tag team in the history of wrestling. While some may put up greater resistance, it can certainly be argued that Edge & Christian formed the greatest tag team of the late-1990s and early-2000s.

While the unfortunate death of Hawk would make this match impossible to play out in real life, WWE 12 makes it a very real possibility. In terms of the match itself, it may not be the best-wrestled bout ever, but the dynamics of the match would make it great.

Few teams were as intimidating and collectively powerful as the Legion of Doom was. Their look was fantastic and the fans really responded. On the other side, Edge & Christian may have been the most charismatic teammates in recent memory and they were both excellent in-ring competitors to boot.

Anytime you can face off two of the best teams from their respective eras, it has to be considered a dream match. You can do just that in WWE 12, and if you're so inclined, you can even get the classic team of Demolition involved as well.

Eddie Guerrero vs. Alberto Del Rio

4 of 5

The best feuds in wrestling tend to be rivalries between competitors who are polar opposites. In the case of current WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio and former WWE Champion Eddie Guerrero, that would most certainly be true.

Del Rio's gimmick is that of a pure-bred Mexican aristocrat. He was brought up in a wealthy family and flaunts that wealth any chance he gets by driving expensive cars to ringside. Guerrero, on the other hand, was of Mexican heritage, but hailed from El Paso, Texas.

While Del Rio's character is very refined, Guerrero portrayed more of a thug who would lie, cheat and steal his way to victory. Guerrero's untimely death makes this match an impossibility in the real world, but thanks to Latino Heat's well-deserved inclusion in WWE 12, you can play it out yourself.

In addition to having gimmicks that mesh quite well, Guerrero was one of the best in-ring competitors of his time, while Del Rio is underrated in that respect currently.

The beauty of the match is that Del Rio, despite his background, is willing to be dishonorable in order to win. The same could be said of Guerrero regardless of whether he was a heel or face.

CM Punk vs. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin

5 of 5

As much hype as the impending WrestleMania match between The Rock and John Cena is generating, it seems as though even more wrestling fans would like to see the fast-rising CM Punk take on "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.

There is no question that those men possess gimmicks that were meant to clash. Punk is a straight-edge savior who scoffs at the weaknesses of others, although that isn't as apparent since his face turn. Austin has always been a beer-guzzling, middle-finger-flashing, no-nonsense guy who is willing to beat down anyone at any time.

Punk and Austin got into a war of words with each other on an episode of RAW during the summer, as well as on Twitter. Because of that fans continue to hold out hope that a match between the two could happen. Austin has said that he can still go, and if he were to return it would be for a program with Punk, whom he really respects as a performer.

Until that feud comes to fruition (if it ever does at all) you can make sure it develops to your satisfaction in WWE 12. The cursing and beer drinking may be kept to a minimum, but you can most certainly get a little taste of what it would be like if Punk and Austin were to ever reach an agreement.
