Urban Meyer Ohio State Speculation: Why Meyer Won't Be Able to Beat the SEC

Randy ChambersNov 18, 2011

It's that time of year again in college football, when the rumors begin flying involving coaching changes. This time, the rumors surround Urban Meyer and which school he will go to.

After all, he's been out of coaching for five minutes. He has to have that itch again, right?

With the Ohio State Buckeyes struggling this season, and with Luke Fickell being more of a temporary replacement, you can bet that Ohio State will be looking for a big name coach to bring this football program back to the top.

Urban Meyer has to be that guy for the Buckeyes and reports like this just make it seem more of a reality. Meyer is a top coach that has a 104-23 record and is 7-1 in bowl games, including two National Championship victories.

He has won at least 73 percent of his games everywhere he has coached and you shouldn't expect that to change at Ohio State. However, he will regret leaving the SEC, because he won't be able to beat them.

The SEC has won the last five BCS National Championships and seven since 1998, when the BCS was introduced. No SEC team has ever lost when they made the BCS National Championship and it appears that at least one SEC team will be there again this season.

The SEC dominates college football, year in and year out. There are currently six teams in the BCS Rankings and three of those teams are in the Top 10.

We all know how great the SEC is, but how does Urban Meyer fare against some of the top teams and coaches?

Meyer joined the SEC in 2005. He is currently 2-3 against the Alabama Crimson Tide and 1-2 against Nick Saban. Against Les Miles and the LSU Tigers, he is 3-3.

Those records aren't disappointing because those are top coaches and top teams, but it could be better.

You also have top coaches in Steve Spurrier, Bobby Petrino and Gene Chizik. Meyer has had his fare share of success against those coaches, but they aren't going anywhere. They still recruit extremely well and put great football teams together every year.

The SEC is simply a more loaded conference that brings in the better players. They are more battle tested from playing in a more competitive conference. Things will also get even better when Texas A&M joins the SEC, since that opens up more recruiting doors in the state of Texas.

The coaches play a huge part, but the players determine the outcome of the game at the end of the day.

It's been hard for any coach to beat the SEC when it really matters. Urban Meyer is a fantastic coach that will really help the Ohio State program. You can't deny his track record and you can bet he'll have the Buckeyes back to being one of the most competitive teams in the country.

However, he still won't be able to beat the SEC.
