Toronto Blue Jays Logo: Shocking Return to Tradition Quite Refreshing

Michael DixonNov 18, 2011

In an era where different teams from all sports are changing their uniforms and logo to create seemingly the ugliest, most ridiculous possible look, it's nice to see a team revert back to a more traditional look.

That's what the Toronto Blue Jays are doing now with a new logo that resembles the one the club had from 1977-1996.

The new look logo, as well as all of the other ones that the franchise has had, can be seen here. The players modeling the new look can be seen here.

Now, the current look isn't identical to the old look, but the two are quite similar.

This look is also similar to the one that the Blue Jays had when they enjoyed their success. They won five division titles, two American League pennants and won the World Series in both of those years.

I am not saying that the different looks were responsible for the lack of success that they have had since going away from the original look. No, the reemergence of the Yankees and Red Sox has something to do with that.

But this is something that more teams need to be doing.

Last week, Matt Snyder of CBSSports gave us a preview of the Marlins' new uniforms. How many different looks have we seen from the football programs at Oregon and Maryland? The Arizona Diamondbacks didn't just change their logo for the 2007 season, they changed their colors.

It gets confusing after a while. The more cynical thought that runs through me is that these teams are just doing it for marketing purposes.

Actually, that's the prevailing thought that runs through me, and even though I like the new look, it also runs through me when thinking about the Blue Jays.

Still, I can't help but smile when I see a team revert to a look similar to the one that they used to have. They're not going out of their way to be spotted from 100 miles away, which often seems to be the case.
