Survivor Series 2011: Why a John Cena Heel Turn Won't Happen

Mike ChiariNov 19, 2011

Ever since John Cena made a simple change in his attire a few weeks ago, rumors have run rampant that he would be turning heel at Survivor Series.

I think such a theory is completely off base, though, and here are a few reasons why.

Many think Cena’s switch to a black shirt, black armbands and camouflage shorts means he is preparing to take on a darker persona. Call me crazy, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a heel that used the slogan, “rise above hate” and wore shorts as a tribute to the troops.

Instead of logic, a Cena heel turn is simply wishful thinking. While it would probably be a huge moment in WWE history, it just wouldn’t make sense to do it now.

With his battle against The Rock at WrestleMania looming, a heel turn is unnecessary.

That isn’t to say that he or The Rock won’t attempt to screw each other over when they team against The Miz and R-Truth at Survivor Series.

But that most certainly does not have to lead to one of them turning heel.

Wrestling fans are generally too caught up with the notion of heels and faces. It’s almost as if they can’t function when two heels feud or when two faces feud.

Because of this, many are clamoring for Cena to turn heel and some are even calling for a Rock heel turn.

But the whole point of Cena versus The Rock is that it is a match between two icons of their respective eras. There is simply no need for a heel in this instance, because it is far more entertaining for there to be a true divide among wrestling fans.

With all that said, the main reason Cena shouldn’t turn heel is he is still the company’s biggest money-maker by a long shot. While CM Punk has begun to surpass him in merchandise sales, it remains to be seen if that can be kept up over the long haul.

Cena’s stranglehold over the younger demographic is huge for the WWE, and I doubt the company is ready to give up on that. It’s true Cena would probably gain new legions of fans with a heel turn, but I have to think the WWE is happy with the status quo in that regard.

Ultimately, while a Cena heel turn is something to consider for the future, it simply shouldn’t be done prior to WrestleMania. Cena and The Rock will get into it somehow at Survivor Series, but not every little incident is going to result in a turn.
