Chelsea vs. Liverpool: Lack of EPL Title Will Hurt Steven Gerrard's Legacy

Nicholas GossNov 18, 2011

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is one of the greatest English players ever, but his legacy will forever be hurt by the lack of a Premier League title.

The Reds' title chase this season could be decided against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.

Gerrard spoke about the void in his trophy case in a recent ESPN article.

"

"It's something I think about almost every day," Gerrard is quoted in the English press. "I always think about the dream of winning it or the disappointment if I was never to win it. Of course, it would be hugely disappointing if it didn't happen. To have played at Liverpool for what will, hopefully, be 14 or 15 years by the time I finish and not win it would be hugely disappointing. It would be an awful shame.

"

Gerrard has won pretty much everything else in his time at Liverpool, including the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup and the Carling Cup.

His ability to score some of the greatest goals you have ever seen and create those opportunities for teammates is quite rare to see in a player, but Gerrard has made the difficult look easy for many years.

Gerrard has finished twice in the Premier League title race during his career, and his failure to lead Liverpool to a league championship has allowed rivals Manchester United to surpass the Reds' record of 18 titles with their 19th last season.

To his credit, it has not been Gerrard that has disappointed in big games. He always seems to rise to the occasion and give his club the best chance to win.

Injuries have really hurt his ability to be a constant attacking force for Liverpool in recent years, and who knows if he and former teammate Fernando Torres were able to stay healthy that the two would have led the Reds to an EPL title.

With the improvements Liverpool made over the summer, the club is building a good roster of young talent that will compete right now and in the future.

Gerrard is optimistic about the squad that has been assembled, saying:

"

The squad is looking stronger. Probably the strongest we've had for a long time. Now it's all about delivering. The tools are all there. Now we need to work hard, focus on each game and try to build on what we've shown over the last 20 or so games.

"

Gerrard is an all-time player, but the lack of a Premier League title will always be a glaring absence from his footballing resume.
