CM Punk WWE: Survivor Series Should Be Start of Extended Title Reign

Tim DanielsNov 20, 2011

Alberto Del Rio has failed as WWE Champion, which means it will be clobbering time for CM Punk at Survivor Series.

Even though most people anticipated Punk's time at the top would've come a lot sooner, the company knew he wouldn't be able to maintain his amazing momentum from the summer alive over an extended period. So they allowed his character to cool off a bit before pushing him back up.

He's still the pipe-bomb dropping, rock-solid wrestling cult hero he was following Money in the Bank, but the expectations have been lowered.

That's a good thing because it will allow him to have a long WWE Championship reign once he does regain the title. Hopefully that happens on Sunday night at Madison Square Garden.

His match with Del Rio is being overshadowed by The Rock's return, but don't be surprised if Punk is the night's biggest winner. The tag match will probably finish with some type of fluky ending where either Rock or Cena, probably Rock, doesn't save his partner to help build tension between the pair.

On the other hand, Punk should hopefully go over the Mexican aristocrat cleanly after a pretty lengthy match with several false finishes.

The Voice of the Voiceless continues to move merchandise at a rate that can only be rivaled by John Cena, thanks to his little Jimmys, and Internet sensation Zack Ryder. When you're doing that, a big push is guaranteed, as Ryder has discovered over the past month.

And once Punk regains the title, he has earned a multiple month run with it. Until Royal Rumble in late January at the very least.

WWE needs him to carry the flag and help television ratings remain reasonable until The Rock is ready to return during the WrestleMania hype stage. It will be a good test to see if Punk can really be the face of the company.

He thinks he's the best in the world, it will soon be time to prove it.
