Survivor Series 2011: Why Traditional 10-Man Tag Match Deserves More Hype

Tim DanielsNov 20, 2011

Lost in the hoopla surrounding The Rock's return to team with John Cena against The Miz and R-Truth is the traditional 10-man Survivor Series tag team man pitting Team Randy Orton against Team Wade Barrett.

Orton's partners include Sheamus, Mason Ryan, Sin Cara and Kofi Kingston, who probably would have been defending his Tag Team Championship if not for Evan Bourne's suspension. It feels a little weird seeing him wrestling singles matches again.

Barrett's heel squad includes Cody Rhodes, Jack Swagger, Hunico and Dolph Ziggler, who takes the spot of an injured Christian. Vickie Guerrero will likely serve as a bigger leader to this team than Barrett once the match actually begins.

It's a match that features most of the WWE's fasting rising stars and hasn't received the build-up it deserves.

Sheamus has been going through a slow, but steady, climb into a possible contender for Mark Henry's World Heavyweight Championship. Christian's injury came at a good time for Sheamus because the pair's feud was getting a bit stale, so maybe now The Great White will take the next step.

A lot can be said about Ryan's in-ring work, most notably that he's still a raw talent, but he has an unmatched look that Vince McMahon dreams about. This will be his first opportunity in a truly marquee match to show off his progress.

Sin Cara's improvement hasn't been noticed because his television time has been decreased, but he's come a long way since his first few botch-filled appearances.

And everybody knows what to expect from Orton and Kingston.

On the flip side you have Rhodes, who is being elevated into main event feuds even though he's a mid-card title holder. That shows how much confidence the company has in his future, although his character is going through a transformation without the mask.

Ziggler is one of the most underrated workers in the business. He sells moves as good or better than anybody else and will be working double duty again as he'll defend his Untied States title against John Morrison (don't count Zack Ryder out of that match yet).

But Barrett has seemingly become the fastest rising star on his team and that's why he's the captain instead of Rhodes. He started getting a push about a month ago and has long-term main event potential, especially considering he actually gets some heat on the mic.

There are so many dynamic superstars and potential feuds brewing in this match that it's a bit shocking more focus hasn't been placed on it.

Regardless, it'll be a fun match to watch. Look for Barrett to lead his team to victory by outlasting Sheamus.
