Bernie Fine: Syracuse Assistant Placed on Leave During Possible Scandal

Gabe ZaldivarNov 17, 2011

The plot continues to thicken amidst an emerging scandal at Syracuse, as recent reports state that assistant coach Bernie Fine has been put on administrative leave.

No university official wants to take any chances, considering the fallout that is taking place at Penn State over the Jerry Sandusky allegations.

So it is no surprise that Bernie Fine is being placed on administrative leave from his post as assistant coach of the Syracuse men's basketball team.

The New York Times' Pete Thamel tweeted what many expected to be the next step as Thursday's news surfaced.

This follows an ESPN report released Thursday afternoon that stated police were "investigating an allegation that Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine molested a team ball boy for more than a dozen years beginning in the mid-1980s."

The investigation centers around allegations made by Bobby Davis, a 39-year-old man that was a ball boy for Syracuse back in 1984.

The allegations claim that Fine molested Davis over the course of several years in various places such as at Fine's house as well as the 1987 Final Four.

Kevin Quinn, Syracuse's senior vice president for public affairs has since issued a statement:

"

"In 2005, Syracuse University was contacted by an adult male who told us that he had reported to the Syracuse City Police that he had been subjected to inappropriate contact by an associate men's basketball coach. The alleged activity took place in the 1980's and 1990's. We were informed by the complainant that the Syracuse City Police had declined to pursue the matter because the statute of limitations had expired."

"

The statement goes on to assert that the University launched their own investigation over a four-month period and found no substantive evidence of wrongdoing.

The report claims that messages were left for Fine as well as head coach Jim Boeheim but neither has commented.
