Report: Syracuse Coach Bernie Fine Being Investigated for Molestation Charges

Gabe ZaldivarNov 17, 2011

Syracuse may need to brace for a thunderstorm of media attention as reports are coming in that assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine is being investigated for molestation.

Bryan Fischer of CBS Sports tweeted on Thursday evening that Fine was reportedly under investigation of molesting a former Syracuse ball boy.

The ESPN report states that Syracuse police are in the early stages of investigating Fine for allegedly molesting Bobby Davis, now 39, starting in 1983.

Davis was a ball boy for the Orangemen starting in 1984 and continued for six years. The allegations state Fine molested Davis in various places, including at the 1987 Final Four.

A second alleged victim told ESPN's Outside the Lines that Fine molested him as well. The second victim is actually a relative of Davis'.

Fine has been a mainstay at Syracuse, and this is now his 35th season as assistant coach under Jim Boehiem. Although, Davis does make clear that he never once told Boeheim about the alleged molestations.

Davis did make an attempt to notify police in 2003. At that time, the detectives sent him off, stating that the statute of limitations had run its course.

The report continues that Outside the Lines had investigated Davis story in 2003 but did not run the story for lack of other victims. Another man has since come forward citing the Jerry Sandusky scandal as a reason for newfound bravery.

There is no word yet from Fine or Syracuse.
