WWE News: Reported Plans for the Rock vs. John Cena at Wrestlemania 28
The Rock and John Cena will team up at Survivor Series this Sunday, and that’s all fine and dandy.
But their tag team bout against The Miz and R-Truth is only a prelude to what will be arguably the biggest match in wrestling history when The Rock faces Cena one-on-one at Wrestlemania 28.
Wrestling fans can’t stop talking about what will happen when two huge stars from two different eras wrestle in Miami, and one topic of debate is whether or not the WWE Championship will be on the line.

Given that Cena is almost always in the WWE title scene, many of us are expecting to see him defending the strap against The Rock at Wrestlemania.
But will he?
"F4WOnline.com is reporting that as of now, WWE does not plan for The Rock vs. John Cena match at WrestleMania 28 to be for the WWE Title.
While creative has gone back and forth as to whether or not the bout should be for the title, and John Cena did cut a promo after last year's WrestleMania claiming that he would be champion by next year, and would defend the title against The Rock, the feeling internally is that the bout does not need to be a title match.
Additionally, WWE management feels the company can get more mileage out of WrestleMania 28 by promoting a separate WWE Title match on the card, and leaving The Rock vs. Cena as a non-title bout.
"
Good call, WWE. Good call.
The reason that The Undertaker doesn’t need a title to be involved in his Wrestlemania matches is that his undefeated streak is enough of a selling point to get people interested in his match.
And the same is true for Cena and The Rock.
This is a match between the second biggest star of the Attitude Era (and now a bona fide movie star) and the biggest name in wrestling today. We do not need a third piece of the puzzle—in this case the WWE Championship—to “make this match more interesting.”
This historic bout is already interesting enough, and all that adding the WWE title to it would accomplish is ridding Monday Night Raw of another main event caliber match for the granddaddy of them all.
Let’s say Raw’s other main event is The Miz vs. CM Punk. Now, is that going to matter more if it’s a singles match or one where the WWE title is on the line?
Exactly.
