Jets vs. Broncos: Does Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow Have Brighter NFL Future?

John RozumNov 17, 2011

It's definitely a question worth discussing, especially based on the recent month of pro football. And that's whether Jets QB Mark Sanchez or Broncos QB Tim Tebow has the brighter future.

So instead of just looking at the tip of the iceberg, let's delve into the question and see if there's a feasible answer.

Mark Sanchez

Since entering the league in 2009, Mark Sanchez has slowly been improving.

His rookie season he started 15 games, finished with a 63.0 rating, had just 2,444 passing yards, 12 TDs, 20 picks and a 53.8 completion percentage.

The following season, however, Sanchez improved and threw 17 TDs to just 13 picks, had almost 3,300 passing yards and a rating over 75.

This season Mark has a rating currently over 80, 14 TDs to nine picks and a 56.7 completion percentage (best so far).

Perhaps most impressive are his numbers in the postseason. He's 4-2 and has led the Jets to two consecutive AFC title games despite being the No. 6 seed. In six career playoff games, he has nine TDs to just three INTs, a rating over 92.

So it is safe to say that Sanchez knows how to win in the playoffs for being such a young QB. And with that, we can't deny that he won't get better. Improvement is all you can ask for, and Mark is proof that he was worth a Top 10 overall draft pick.

Tim Tebow

As of right now Tim Tebow is saving the Broncos season. Or maybe that can also be attributed to drafting LB Von Miller who has eight sacks and 38 tackles. In any event, the reason why Tebow is relevant is because the Broncos are winning with him under center.

To that end, his numbers don't really mean anything because getting the W is what matters most. That said, Denver has won three of their last four games and are just one game back at 4-5 in the AFC West.

For the year, Tim has seven TD passes to just one INT, and two rushing TDs. In theory, that's an excellent ratio when you consider how weak the Broncos pass offense has been this season. The question is whether this veer/option offense can last in the NFL.

In addition, if Tebow becomes a threatening enough offensive weapon there, then can he buy himself more time to develop as a pocket passer? If so, his versatile threat will be unmatched.

And with the recent performances, he obviously still has a lot of improving to do when under center. However, for now it's proving to be just good enough as he's more of a rushing threat anyway.

Answer

Not by a wide margin but Mark Sanchez has the brighter future. For one, we've seen Sanchez play two full seasons and six playoff games, whereas Tebow's really just taking off.

There's simply more evidence to prove in favor of Sanchez. Now, that by no means excludes Tebow from having a bright future. And in the long-run, once we see more of Tebow in action, he could really leave a historic mark on pro football.

For years having a solid pocket passer has been the answer, but can you imagine what will occur if Tebow dominates the NFL by running a college-style veer/option offense? It will change the pro football landscape for quite some time.

Until then, however, Sanchez gets the nod as he's been improving each year since 2009, has legit postseason experience and has more film to dissect. In another year or two things may be different.
