MLB: Jered Weaver Finishes Second in AL Cy Young Voting

Los Angeles Angels ace Jered Weaver finished second in the 2011 AL Cy Young award voting, receiving 97 points, well behind the 196-point total of Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander.

Verlander won all 28 first place votes, becoming the first unanimous AL winner since Johan Santana of the Twins in 2006.

While there is no doubt Weaver had a career year, his stats didn't quite match up to those of Verlander, who won the pitching Triple Crown. Verlander now looks to be the first pitcher to win the MVP award since Roger Clemens did it in 1986.

Weaver had a career-high 18 wins, paired with eight losses. He became the fastest pitcher ever to win six games, taking home the W in each of his first six starts.

Following a memorable April, however, was a May to forget. Although his individual statistics were still very good, he went 0-4 in the month.This put him behind Verlander in the wins race, who finished the season with 24.

Weaver also had a career-low 2.41 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP, second only to Verlander's .98 number. His 198 strikeouts were the second most in his career, the first being last year's league-leading 233.

Finishing third in the voting was the Tampa Bay Rays' James Shields followed by Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia.
