USA vs. Slovenia: Jurgen Klinsmann's Crew Explodes from Offensive Funk

Richard LangfordNov 15, 2011

The US soccer team finally proved they could score goals under Jurgen Klinsmann. While these results came against a less than dominant Slovenia team, it is just nice to see them put up three goals in any match.

The three goals bettered the US' total of two goals in six games under Klinsmann. In those six games they were just 1-4-1.

The US took down Slovenia 3-2 on a pitch shrouded in fog. All three goals came in the first half in what can only be described as an offensive explosion given the US' inability to put anything in the net leading up to this match.

Man of the Match: Fabian Johnson

The German transfer made his first start for the US, and he rewarded his coach with a brilliant game. He was superb on defense all match.

He also helped add to the offensive attack, and that was apparent from the start. He fired off a shot in the first minute. He also made a nice run in the 11th minute, which almost led to the US' second goal.

Promising Signs of Progress

Coming into this match, Klinsmann had the US running almost exclusively in a 4-1-3-1-1. In efforts to spark the offense Klinsmann elected to pull the central midfielder, which had been wedged at the center of his midfield, for a second advanced striker.

This paid immediate dividends for the team.

It allowed them to create more pressure on the defense. This resulted in more shots and quality looks.

This new attack can be incorporated into the US' attack in the future, and it is promising to see that Klinsmann has a tactic to bring this offense to life.
