Penn State Scandal: 4 Coaches We Already Know Won't Take the Job

Randy ChambersNov 15, 2011

With only a couple of weeks left in the college football regular season and the scandal going on at Penn State, there is plenty to think about. One of the main topics of conversation is who will replace legendary head coach Joe Paterno? There have been plenty of names tossed out there but only a few will actually take on the task of coaching at a program that is under constant heat.

Here are some of the coaches that won't take the head coaching job at Penn State.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney

Swinney is a solid head coach and a great recruiter but he won't take the Penn State job. The main reason is he is already building something special at Clemson and there is really no reason for him to leave. It would take a great offer for him to leave the Tigers and he would probably consider it if Penn State wasn't in this scandal. But since the Nittany Lions have a black cloud hanging over them, there's almost no chance.

Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald is one of the top young coaches in the country and will have several job offers thrown at him. I don't see him leaving Northwestern for Penn State under these circumstances. He just recently signed a 10-year contract at the university and has shown great loyalty to the school. He has done a solid job at Northwestern since he has arrived and has led the Wildcats to three straight bowl games which is a team record.

ESPN's Jon Gruden

Jon Gruden has no college football head coaching experience. He also just signed a new contract with ESPN to continue broadcasting for Monday Night Football. Would you seriously leave the broadcast booth to deal with this mess at Penn State? We can kill all of these rumors now because I really don't see this happening. Look for Gruden to take a job as an NFL head coach before he goes to Penn State.

Virginia head coach Mike London

London has done a great job for what he has to work with at Virginia, coaching them to a 7-3 record so far this season. He is a fabulous motivator and really knows how to get the most out of his players. But London doesn't have the resume to take over such a tall task of coaching at Penn State. The Nittany Lions aren't the Richmond Spiders or the Virginia Cavilers. Penn State has already reached out to London and he has declined the offer.
