NFL Power Rankings: Looking at Teams Losing the Most Ground

John RozumNov 15, 2011

Although the postseason is still technically alive for the following three teams, they are losing ground, and fast, within their respective divisions.

With only seven weeks remaining, time is of the essence.

Detroit Lions (6-3)

The Lions are losers in three of their last four games, were blasted by the Bears in Chicago and are now three games back of Green Bay in the division. The only reason why Detroit is still up on Chicago, though, is because of their 2-1 division record (Bears are 2-2).

That said, Detroit has yet to play Green Bay and still has to go on the road in New Orleans and Oakland. That's potentially four losses right there, and by season's end, The Motor City will be fortunate to finish 9-7.

Until the Lions will themselves out of the current slump, the Bears will catch them within the next few weeks.

Cincinnati Bengals (6-3)

Saving the Bengals' season right now are two games against Baltimore and Cleveland at home. All three are winnable games, because with the Rams and Cardinals left, that's two more wins right there.

What's hurting Cincinnati, however, is their No. 23 and No. 20-ranked pass and rush offense. The defense ranks in the Top 10, but the home loss to Pittsburgh displayed that the offense needs to play even better if they want any shot at making a deep run in the postseason.

Of the teams mentioned here, Cincinnati does have the best shot at making the playoffs and has a defense that can win them games. But if they don't beat the Ravens at least once, it's quite possible the AFC's No. 6 seed goes elsewhere.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-5)

Not only is Tampa Bay losing ground in the NFC South, they're in the midst of a complete breakdown. The Buccaneers defense ranks horrendously low at No. 28 and No. 29 against the pass and rush, respectively. Altogether, they allow just over 400 total yard per game.

Offensively, it doesn't get much better either. Tampa ranks No. 15 in pass offense and No. 25 in rushing, which is unfortunate because LeGarrette Blount is a solid RB. The only problem, since their defense allows so many points and yards, is that they have to revert to their mediocre passing game. And that's not good enough to help them win.

Not to mention, Tampa is a dismal road team. Five of their remaining seven games are on the road, so barring a quick and complete turnaround, the Buccaneers will be lucky to finish 7-9.
