Mike McQueary: What Took PSU Coach so Long to Speak Up?

Mike McQueary finally “spoke up” about his role in the Jerry Sandusky scandal that has turned Penn State on its head in the form of a leaked e-mail to his former college football teammates.

McQueary was the graduate assistant in the grand jury report who allegedly saw Sandusky in the Nittany Lions showers sexually assaulting an approximately 10-year-old boy.

The grand jury report also notes that McQueary was distraught and immediately left to call his father.

His latest e-mail contradicts those statements.

Some highlights,

"I did the right thing…you guys know me... the truth is not out there fully... I didn't just turn and run... I made sure it stopped... I had to make quick tough decisions…"

Why did McQueary feel the need to change his story in an email sent to friends he played with at Penn State while he was the quarterback from 1994-1997?

It’s going to harm the case against Sandusky, and it also won’t help McQueary regain a shred of dignity, which is what I assume the purpose of the e-mail was.

McQueary is currently on paid administrative leave and has retained an attorney to safeguard himself.

He obviously can see and hear the public outcry against him, and his lack of action and is just now, a week after the scandal broke, attempting to save face.

If he had come out right away with a public statement, instead of waiting to see how it played out then meekly trying to conjure up an excuse to defend himself, things would be much different.

I expect him to eventually speak out on this whole issue after his counsel has advised him on exactly what to say and how to spin this to attempt to regain public favor.

It will be ill-advised and too little, too late.

Based on the record of testimony, McQueary saw that child get abused and did nothing to stop it, and changing his story now will only harm the case.
