Jerry Sandusky Interview: Sandusky Adds Arrogance, Stupidity to Crimes

Michael CahillNov 14, 2011

It’s one thing for Jerry Sandusky to want his day in court as a part of his right as an American citizen. It’s another to go on national TV and trivialize the crimes against you as “horseplay” and to spit in the face of the victims who have faced irreparable damage from his alleged misconduct.

In an interview Sandusky did with NBC's Bob Costas on the program Rock Center, he did nothing but hurt his image further, and no one thought that was humanly possible.

Sure, Sandusky doesn’t view his actions as a crime—as a matter of fact, he flat-out denies having committed them. In the eyes and words of Jerry Sandusky, he only made the mistake of showering with the kids, but that's all.

Mike McQueary’s eyewitness account of anal rape in 2002? Whipping towels at each and sliding across the shower floor.

The 2000 accusation by a janitor that Sandusky performed oral sex on a boy in those same Penn State showers? Simply didn’t happen.

Every other victim that has come forward to allege an inappropriate and criminal sexual relationship with the man they trusted? Simply not true.

Somehow Sandusky convinced himself the “it wasn’t me” defense would help him if he spoke about it on national TV. Though when Bob Costas asks him point blank if he's sexually attracted to young boys, the pause and awkward silence Sandusky took was deafening. He came off looking worse, as Sean Jensen, beat reporter for the Chicago Bears, so accurately summed up.

It’s a shame Sandusky is a ignorant as he is vilified because there is nothing he could have accomplished on TV, short of a confession, that would have begun to erase the public perception that Jerry Sandusky is a monster who took advantage of kids that trusted him.

For those that read the excruciating 25-page grand jury report on the alleged crimes will never believe what Sandusky comes to an interview and says. The evidence too strong, the stories too similar, the pattern too common, to be brushed off as a kid making it up or a misunderstanding of circumstances.

Then to have the audacity to confess the only culpability in the downfall of an entire university and the shame of thousands of Penn State alums is to say he shouldn’t have showered with those boys, a fact that should have become clear to him when an angry mother confronted him in 1998. Yet he continued to do it. You can add "irresponsible" to his list of character defects.

None of it matters really. At the end of the day he’ll have to answer to a jury that will take all things into account. The jury members will have to decide what they believe about Jerry Sandusky, looking at overwhelming evidence and decide if it was merely a case of horseplay.

For Sandusky’s sake. he should hope he doesn’t do anymore interviews. As we saw tonight, nothing good can come of them.
