Pacquiao vs. Marquez 3: Injustice in Trilogy Makes Rematch Unappealing

Adam WellsNov 14, 2011

With all the controversy surrounding Manny Pacquiao's victory over Juan Manuel Marquez, there seems to be a groundswell of support from fans to put these two back in the ring for a fourth time to determine who really is best.

Not to burst your bubble, but another fight between Pacquiao and Marquez would not yield a different result. Fans and analysts are even calling this a robbery and a travesty.

Here is how Tim Smith of the New York Daily News described it:

There is no truth to the rumor that Manny Pacquiao was seen speeding away from the MGM Grand Garden Arena wearing a mask with three blind judges in the backseat on Saturday night.

But after he took a controversial 12-round majority decision from Juan Manuel Marquez to the disbelief of many ringside observers and a partisan Mexican crowd, Ignacio (Nacho) Berstain, Marquez’s trainer, could have sworn that’s exactly what he saw.

"

Marquez threw everything he had at Pacquiao for 12 rounds, and when that wasn't good enough, he tried to use the kitchen sink and that did not work.

Now, what is the appeal of a rematch? We know that Marquez has the ability to hang around with Pacquiao for an entire fight, but he has not been able to put him away. In the event of an extremely close fight, the result is always going to go to the champion.

That is not to say that the fight was fixed—it is just the way that judging in boxing and mixed martial arts works.

Unless we have definitive proof that Marquez can knock Pacquiao out or soundly beat him on the scorecard, there is no reason to do a fourth fight. He has never shown the ability to do that, so there is nothing to gain from doing another fight.

Marquez does have a legitimate argument as the better fighter when all was said and done, but that does not mean that he should have won, because, round-by-round, things change. Nor does it mean he should get another chance to defeat Pacquiao.
