Bowl Projections: Why Oregon Will Face LSU in BCS Title Game

T.J. McaloonNov 14, 2011

There is a rematch on the horizon for college football to determine their national champion. You may think it’s going to be Alabama playing LSU for the national championship. But you are wrong, way wrong. It’s going to be the Oregon Ducks who will challenge the LSU Tigers in the Superdome on January 9.

What’s that you say? “T.J. you are nuts to think that Oregon will leap Alabama if Oklahoma State loses.”

Well, I say to you that you are the ones who are crazy if you think that Alabama will make it to New Orleans to face LSU for the BCS National Title.

It will be very hard, almost impossible, for Oregon to leap over Alabama in the BCS Standings. As of now, Alabama owns a large .0344 lead over the Ducks. Now, it doesn’t look like a lot, as Alabama has .9099 to Oregon’s .8755, but in BCS math, that lead is like having a five-game division lead in baseball, with seven games remaining.

However, Oregon will chip away at this lead that Alabama owns. The Ducks still have games against a 7-2 USC Trojans team and the Pac-12 Championship Game.

The two games will move them closer, but in the long run will not vault Oregon over Alabama. What will vault Oregon over Alabama can be summed up in two words.

War Eagle!

Yes, the defending National Champions have had a terrible follow-up year in defending their BCS title. But rivalry games always bring out the best in teams. This year’s Iron Bowl will give Auburn the chance to ruin Alabama’s chances at playing for their second national title in three years.

Take a look back at the last two Iron Bowls. Both games have had national title implications for both teams. And the visitor in both of these games was playing with their championship lives on the line.

In both games the home team took an early lead, but could not withstand the relentless attack from the visitors, falling in the end.

However, both of those years both Alabama and Auburn had multiple offensive weapons who could take over the game. This year Alabama has just one in Trent Richardson, which will be their downfall in this year’s Iron Bowl.

Auburn tops Alabama in this year’s Iron Bowl and litters Toomer Corner trees with toilet papers, as Oregon awaits the outcome of the Oklahoma State-Oklahoma game.

It’s as simple as that, as LSU and Oregon will meet in a rematch from Week 1.
