Pacquiao vs. Marquez 3: 4th Fight Would Be Dangerous for Manny Pacquiao

Adam WellsNov 14, 2011

The first thing that was on everyone’s mind after it was announced that the judges gave Manny Pacquiao a majority decision over Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday night was that they are likely going to matchup again.

While there would obviously be a huge market for that fight, especially considering the controversy that took over this decision, Pacquiao would be entering dangerous territory if he agreed to another bout with Marquez.

This whole thing is purely speculation right now, and Marquez even talked about retiring after this latest setback.

"Honestly, I don't know what I need to do to change the minds of the judges," Marquez said through a translator. "It's the result of the fight that's making me think about retirement. We really wanted to tell the judges to score the fight the way it was happening and not the way that they scored."

Boxing retirements don’t mean a thing, and if the money was right, which it would be, Marquez would absolutely take another fight with Pacquiao.

But Pacquiao stands to lose a lot more than he can gain with another fight against Marquez. There have been few fighters in the last five years that have given him a real test, but Marquez has definitely been one of them. And Marquez has done it twice in that time.

Things are not easy for Pacquiao right now, especially with rumors and speculation of conspiracies and fixing going on in some circles, but time heals all wounds, and at the end of the day, he still has two victories over Marquez.

Another fight could ruin everything that Pacquiao has built and wants to continue working towards as he enters the final phase of his career.

Pacquiao knows how dangerous Marquez is. He knows that he is lucky to have gotten that victory on Saturday night. He knows all the things that people are saying, but his reputation will go back to being what it was before that fight and that decision.

Now is not the time to be looking back at what was. It is time to look forward and focus on what is going to come. Pacquiao is too smart to fall in the trap that people are setting for him right now, and he has nothing left to prove against Marquez.

Will there be questions that fans want answered? Yes. Does that mean that Pacquiao has to provide those answers? No.

Pacquiao can’t afford to risk everything that he has built over the last six years on speculation and hearsay from fans and analysts.
