Pacquiao vs. Marquez 3: Manny Pacquiao Should Be Worried About Floyd Mayweather

Ryan RudnanskyNov 14, 2011

Whether Manny Pacquiao's victory over Juan Manuel Marquez was earned on Saturday is debatable, but one thing that can be said for certain is that he hasn't looked dominant in his last two fights.

After a ho-hum decision victory against Shane Mosley in May, Pacquiao narrowly won a majority decision against Marquez on Saturday, and some believed he actually lost that fight.

We've all been clamoring for a potential superfight between Pacquiao and pound-for-pound No. 2 Floyd Mayweather Jr.

But while I believed Pacquiao would come out on top before, I'm not so sure now. Pacquiao's become a more polished fighter now, with better defense, counter-punching and the ability to damage foes with his right hand. But he also hasn't looked as electric and dangerous as before.

While that could be chalked up to facing perhaps his biggest rival in Marquez, that wasn't the case against Mosley, a 40-year-old fighter who is on his last legs.

It's also worth noting that when Mayweather faced Marquez in September 2009, he defeated him handily in 12 rounds.

I don't respect Mayweather for waiting this long to fight Pacquiao (as I believe he doesn't want to even risk his undefeated record), but the fact of the matter is he appears to have an edge right now over Pacquiao. If he wants to fight Pacquiao, now is as good a time as any.

While Marquez is one of the best counter-punchers in boxing, he may only be rivaled by Mayweather. If Mayweather exacted the same strategy against Pacquiao, he'd have a very good chance of downing the legendary Filipino.

And imagine what that would do for Mayweather's legacy.

Can you hear me Floyd?
