BCS Rankings: Why There Won't Be a Rematch in BCS Title Game

Austin GreenNov 14, 2011

Unfortunately for fans in Alabama and Oregon, there will not be a rematch to decide the BCS championship.

As long as LSU stays undefeated, their opponent will come from Oklahoma.

The No. 5 ranked Sooners have a showdown with No. 2 Oklahoma State in the last game of the regular season. Whoever wins will punch their ticket to the BCS Championship Game on January 9.

If Oklahoma State wins, they'll finish the season undefeated and there will be no arguments about their place in the title game.

If Oklahoma pulls off the upset, they'll finish with an 11-1 record and five victories over top 25 opponents. If there's any justice in college football, they will finish ranked ahead of 'Bama and the Ducks.

This situation should be pleasing for neutral college football fans, as the Cowboys and Sooners look like the only teams in the nation capable of scoring on that vicious LSU defense.

Oklahoma State is the second-highest scoring team in college football, putting up an absurd 51.7 points per game. The Sooners are right behind them with 45.4 points per game.

The Cowboys have the best quarterback-receiver combination in the country with Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon. Weeden is second in the nation with 3,635 passing yards and 31 touchdowns. Blackmon has caught 14 of those touchdowns, which is tied for first among wide receivers.

Led by junior QB Landry Jones, the Sooners also have a potent passing attack. Like Weeden, the future NFL first-round pick is in the top 10 in passing yards and touchdowns this season.

He lost his top target Ryan Broyles to a torn ACL two weeks ago, but that hasn't slowed him down. He still has two dangerous receivers in Kenny Stills and Jaz Reynolds.

With a national championship berth on the line, this will be a shootout of epic proportions.

Sorry, Alabama and Oregon fans. Rather than a rematch with LSU, you'll likely get the loser of this game.
