BCS Rankings 2011: Teams That Don't Deserve Their Rank

Clemson is beginning to show why they started the season unranked. They are a flawed team that blinded people with an amazingly clutch and win filled start to their season.

However, they are not a top-10 caliber team. They aren't the only team that doesn't deserve their ranking, either.

Clemson

A string of early season upsets and a penchant for comebacks found them flying up the rankings. They were a perfect 8-0 before falling to Georgia Tech 31-17.

They followed that loss up with a very uninspiring 31-28 win over Wake Forest.

And now that we are not blinded by their undefeated record, it is easy to see this team's faults.

Those faults lie on the defensive side of the football. The Tigers are 59th in the nation in points allowed per game.

They are getting beat both on the ground and in the air. They allow 4.7 yards per rush. They have also allowed opposing QBs to have a QB rating of 121.1.

It is clear that this is not a defense of a top-10 team.

Arkansas

Arkansas is not as good as their record or ranking suggests. 

Their problems are similar to Clemson's. They are overpowering opponents with their offense. This has led them to a 9-1 record despite having a weak defense.

They are allowing 4.4 yards per rush, and opposing QBs have a rating of 114.6. This has led them to being ranked 30th in points allowed per game.

Now, those numbers are not horrible, but they look even worse considering the offenses Arkansas has faced. They started off the year against Missouri State, New Mexico and Troy, all teams that shouldn't even be on the same field as Arkansas.

They then allowed 24 points to Ole Miss, and they are 109th in the nation in points scored per game. They followed that effort up by allowing 28 to a Vanderbilt team that is 68th in the nation in points scored per game.

Arkansas does not have the defense to be a top-10 team.

Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech has a horrible resume. While they have only one loss, they have only beat one team in the top 25. That was their most recent victory over Georgia Tech.

Prior to that, the only ranked team they had played was Clemson, and they were absolutely destroyed by Clemson, 23-3.

As a result of their weak schedule, their stats are not bad. And they do have a solid defense, but this is a weak and unimposing offense.

If their defense is not setting them up with a short field or scoring themselves, this offense struggles to score. Just two weeks ago, they put up only 14 points against Duke. Duke is 83rd in the nation in points allowed per game. 

Virginia Tech is a fraud, and sooner or later, they will be exposed.
