Manny Pacquiao Should Avoid Superfight vs. Floyd Mayweather After Narrow Victory
Manny Pacquiao scored a controversial majority decision victory over Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday night and that result should signal to Pac-Man now is not the time for a potential superfight against Floyd Mayweather in May.
Mayweather had no trouble with Marquez when the pair fought two years ago. Pacquiao hasn't been able to accomplish such dominance in three tries, and one could claim, as Marquez likely will, that Dinamita could have won all three bouts.
The general perception to this point has been Mayweather is ducking Pacquiao. After his lackluster performance against Marquez, it might be time for Pac-Man to start talking his way out of a possible clash.
Like Marquez, Mayweather would likely utilize a counterattacking style that would limit Pacquiao's chances to use his devastating combinations.
Just like in every other sport, boxing has matchup problems. Defensive boxers who have enough power to land some big shots while Pacquiao is prodding for an opening are the Fighting Pride of the Philippines' kryptonite.
If Pacquiao wants to give himself the best opportunity to succeed against Money May, he needs to become more acclimated at attacking that style of fighter. Even if it means taking on Marquez for a fourth time, even though that seems like a long shot right now.
Although a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight is what the entire boxing world is waiting for, it doesn't make sense for either boxer to agree to it if they aren't confident about their chances.
Pretty Boy certainly liked what he witnessed last night, the same can't be said for Pac-Man.
It's a fight that must happen before both men decide to hang up the gloves, but there is still a pretty large window before that happens. For it to live up to what will likely be unmatched hype though, both men will need to be in elite form.
If that means Pac-Man needs to take another fight before a meeting with Mayweather next fall or winter, he should do it. Because once they agree, there's no turning back.
